Nothing draws people into MMOs more than interacting with other players. It is, after all, the entire reason to play an MMO rather than a single-player RPG. All those people experiencing and influencing the same world as you. With so many people put into one place, it’s natural that alliances and social hierarchies eventually form. The most obvious of these constructs is the guild.
The guild has been a staple of MMO mechanics since the start of the genre, with ever-changing rosters and dramatic stories accompanying it the entire way. Despite the inherent dangers of pledging loyalty to a bunch of internet strangers, the guild system has generally worked out for the best. Guilds have given us some truly incredible tales of both betrayal and teamwork, after all. But not even this venerated mainstay of the MMO community is safe from a scrutinizing eye.
