Wii Price Cut Coming May 15th? (RUMOR)

Are you one of those folks that couldn’t bring yourself to invest $250 in a Nintendo WIi at launch, or even $200 after the price dropped? You may get the opportunity to pick up the little white console for just $150 soon.

Engadget is reporting that a source has told them a price cut is in the offing for Nintendo’s console, and that it’s coming next month. If their source is correct, the Wii will drop to $150 on May 15th.

I wouldn’t be surprised if this was true. After all, sales of the Wii have been a bit flat of late, and Nintendo is starting lose the massive lead they had gained over Sony and Microsoft in install base. Still, this seems like the sort of thing that might be the headline for Nintendo’s E3 press conference. Looks like we’ll just have to wait and see.

UPDATE: GoNintendo is featuring a shot of a KMart price listing that reflects the $150 system price as well. This seems to point toward it being real.

So the actual materials and labor costs to build a Wii are like $50 now?

With the nice buffer of profits they’ve been making on every console unit sold since day one, I don’t think Nintendo be hurting anytime soon.

$150 still seems overpriced for what is essentially 10 year old technology. What a strange and stubborn marketing strategy Nintendo has.
