Wii U Won’t Play DVDs

Hey, so Satoru Iwata didn’t just say stupid things about the Wii U. He also said something logical. It turns out that the Wii U won’t have the ability to play movies on DVD or Blu-ray, instead only handling its proprietary new disc format. And here’s why, according to Iwata:

The reason for that is that we feel that enough people already have devices that are capable of playing DVDs and Blu-ray, such that it didn’t warrant the cost involved to build that functionality into the Wii U console because of the patents related to those technologies.

That is a totally logical train of thought. I currently have five devices capable of playing DVDs — and I only have two TVs — so I don’t really need another one. That means I certainly won’t weep over this missing feature in the Wii U.

I’m ok with it as long as the price of the console be shipper than ps3\360.

Not paying patents and copyright=reduce production cost=lower price for buyers (i hope)

i like it
