Video: Watch Wired & Sony Disassemble A PS4

Wired has a few different posts about Sony and the PS4 up today. There’s a great read about Mark Cerny and his work on the new console, and it chronicles the development of the hardware from start to finish.

If you don’t have time during the workday to dive into a feature, this awesome PS4 teardown video (above) should be more your speed. Wired got Yasuhiro Ootori,┬áSCE’s Engineering Director, to dismantle a PS4 on camera for all the world to see.

None of the hardware or design really stands out as a shocker during the teardown — from the optical drive to the hard drive and integrated WiFi antenna, it’s all pretty standard-looking. One design choice that gives me pause, however, is how the APU shares a heatsink with the GDDR5 memory, which sits around the APU on the mainboard. That’s a lot of heat for one heatsink to deal with. Fingers crossed that PS4′s don’t start melting in everyone’s entertainment centers!
