Woohoo! Super Smash Bros. Brawl Online Play CONFIRMED

smash-bros-screen1.jpg

I really expected this to be announced at this year’s E3, and when it wasn’t, I got really worried. And so did a lot of other diehard Smash Bros. fans all around the web – but we don’t have to hold our breath any longer. Smash Bros. DOJO!! has made the news official: Smash Bros. Brawl supports the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection, and you can play the game online. You’ll be able to select whether you want to play versus friends or anyone, so don’t worry if you don’t have a friends list full of Smash Bros. fanatics.

When playing against friends, you can send short messages (which you enter in advance) by pressing the d-pad. However, when playing against random folks, no one’s name or any sort of information will be displayed, and you can’t send those short message taunts. Plus, there’s no record kept of your wins and losses in this mood. Oh come on Nintendo, why can’t there at least be an option to enable these things? We’re not all kids.

Nintendo is planning “a number of services that make use of Wi-Fi,” but these plans won’t be revealed until later.

So, lots of good news with a few sprinkles of not-so-good news, but this certainly beats the prospect of no online play. Check after the break for more screenshots from the online version of the game.

The pure and utter elation I am feeling from today’s update is astronomical. My fingernails were bleeding from the constant nervous biting because I thought something was up when they didn’t announce online play at E3.

Now my fingers can finally get the rest they deserve… until they are worn out again from overplaying this game.

To be honest, I’m glad win/loss ratios aren’t included. If I’ve learnt anything from playing Command and Conquer 3 online, it’s that having a less-than ‘good’ record gets you kicked out of games…which isn’t fun.

    Still, this is cool, definitely.

Err,to reply to the blog.It is “way” better if this game “didnt” keep track of any records because just think.Rank and stats would be flawed from the beginning due to people siting there while getting help from there mates getting unfair/unrealistic amount of kills/death,thus making them a fake #1.For futher proof of this,go look at that rank up crap on Socom 3 and such.Trust me,this is coming from a dude that used to play that game hardcore with legit stats. Now the games a live Comedy Central(late at night) to hear other whine and cry “OH I LIT HIM UP DUDE!!@! WTF WAS THAT!!@#!? o.O”

It also puts a bad image on the game if rank was allowed, leading to things like harassments, false accusments of whos cheating and whos not,you know, internet gangters stuff..

Nintendo also doesnt wanna alienate those who dont speak “nerd”,or dont understand wtf a rank/stat,nor giving a rats ass what it means,so in a turn of events, they make going online just as easy as setting up offline play. And hey, whos not to say that you cant keep track of your own stats? I can almost be for certain that the hardcore/tournment players will keep track of there stats via a website,or if they prefer not to cheat themsleves, write them using pen and paper.Hell,we still gotta write the friends code down dont we?

We cannot forget on whats making the Wii sale guys, and if anything, its because of its ease of use. So,all and out, online is now offically confirmed, but one question still remains…Sonic…

Iam not a Sonic die hard fan but that thing still has me puzzled atm. With the recent updates with Ice Climbers and such tho,I have a feeling we will find out very soon.Sooner than expected if you get what Iam saying.

And as far as a ‘number of services that make use of wifi’ is that limited to SSB:B?
