World of Darkness MMO Canceled by CCP Games

CCP Games has laid off 56 employees at its Georgia studio after ending development on the World of Darkness MMO.

CCP announced today that the oft-delayed World of Darkness MMO has been canceled. Originally announced in late 2006, the game never seemed to find its footing, and as recently as February of this year CEO Hilmar Pétursson said the design was still being molded. But today the studio announced that the project has been canceled entirely, and that 56 employees at its Atlanta studio have been laid off as a result.

“The decision to end the World of Darkness MMO project is one of the hardest I’ve ever had to make. I have always loved and valued the idea of a sandbox experience set in that universe, and over the years I’ve watched the team passionately strive to make that possible,” Pétursson said in a statement. “I am truly sorry that we could not deliver the experience that we aspired to make. We dreamed of a game that would transport you completely into the sweeping fantasy of World of Darkness, but had to admit that our efforts were falling regretfully short. One day I hope we will make it up to you.”

The Atlanta studio will remain open, but will now work exclusively on CCP’s EVE Universe.

That’s a shame, it was the only MMO I was really looking forward to. There are so many themepark quest grinding pieces of trash around these days that this would have been a true breath of fresh air. Unfortunately, it’s not to be.

They apparently decided to pump all their money into Dust and Valkyrie to build up their existing MMO universe. I think this game will happen eventually, but it’s not going to happen any time soon (it has been 8 years, after all). The demand for it is there, and CCP seems to have the best mindset as far as PvP goes, IMO.

Star Citizen has shaken up CCP so badly that they had to can a project to do what they should of been doing friggin years ago! And that’s stepping outside the box, they’ve hid behind curtains for too long and and let time and basic html code beat them. Now they look like copy cats, lemons, with lots of rotten egg on their mushed faces.
CCP = idiots stuck in room for a decade never listening to their clients/customer screams, now they want to copy/follow a true leader Star Citizen who innovative brand new ideas are flawing their own originality. CCP are just an embarrassment to themselves and should be cowering and ashamed for being complacent and boring.
