World of Warcraft Trial Account Limitations Enacted to Combat Spammers

gold_farmers.jpgAs Blizzard has made it ever more difficult for spammers and gold sellers to do their dirty work, the operations have come up with a new method of assaulting subscribers.

If you’ve made a new character anytime in the last few months then you’ve experienced the latest form of gold seller spam. You’ll be doing your leveling thing, grinding or boars or what not, and suddenly you’ll get a party invite from a level 1 warrior in either Elwynn Forest or Durotar. Should you accept the invite, you’ll be inundated with offers for everything from “cheap WoW gold” to hacks that transform your character into a level 10,000 behemoth.

To meet this new challenge, Blizzard has placed new limitations on its World of Warcraft 10 day trial accounts.

We applied a small hotfix early this morning to include an additional restriction to trial accounts.

Trial accounts may no longer invite players to a party. They can still, however; accept invites from subscriber accounts who they may wish to group with.

Many other restrictions have been leveled on trial accounts to keep them from being exploited by gold farming operations. From level caps to limiting gold to 10G per trial account, Blizzard keeps throwing up new defenses and the gold farmers keep finding a way around them. A full list of current limitations to trial accounts can be found after the break.

It’s such a pity they don’t make all this legal, through controlled channels and web sites, and put these pirates out of business for good.

The following restrictions are placed on all Classic Trial Accounts:

  • A level cap of 20.
  • A maximum of 10 gold.
  • Trade skills are capped at 100 ranks.
  • Inability to trade via the auction house, mailbox, or player-to-player.
  • In-Game public chat channels will be unavailable. (Players will still be able to communicate using say, party, or whispers).
  • Characters will be unable to create or join existing guilds.
  • Accounts will no longer be able to whisper other players unless they have been added to those players’ friends lists or have received a whisper from them first.
  • Characters will not be able to invite players into a party.
  • Characters will not be able to join parties with other players above level 20.
  • Voice Chat is disabled on trial accounts.
  • Realms with login queues will give priority to customers with retail accounts.
  • Will not be eligible for any Character Transfer service.

I have a trial account and just started about a week ago. It is a bit disappointing that my toon will only level up another 4 levels, but I understand the reasoning behind capping the trial account.

It allows anyone who is curious about WOW to be fully engaged with it and find out if they will like it enough to shell out the 15 bucks a month.

It also makes it much more difficult for those who only look to profit from WOW rather than enjoy the game for what it was designed to be.
A fun, bad-ass, playground for people who enjoy your RPG, Open-world environments.

I disagree with the comments above. I do not believe that the tone is necessary nor is the slang apropos.
I will be purchasing a subscription when my trial is up or when I reach the cap. The game is that cool.

On July 1, 2009 at 3:34 pm

I’ll get right to that because it does suck.

On July 5, 2009 at 4:01 am

Sure it does suck, but its there for a reason i suppose.
And as said above if you wanna play the whole game that bad paying £10 a month doesnt seem that bad :/

And the game is a hell of alot better with friends (Y)

“It’s such a pity they don’t make all this legal, through controlled channels and web sites, and put these pirates out of business for good.”

Don’t you understand this would ruin the game even more? If blizzard is gonna sell gold and stuff for real life money, the rich people would be better at all time. A little like real life u see. I think blizzard should invest more in preventing poeple from buying gold instead. As they earn big loads of money anyway :)

I think the game is really cool, and worth paying for, but i am a bit disappointed with the skill cap. I can understand the lvl cap and such, but the skill cap does seem a bit much. Plus, maybe cause i am still a new player, i can’t really see where “gold farmers”, or whatever they are called, can profit off of using skills to get gold. Especailly if there are restrictions on trading like there are. So while i can see the point in and agree with the other restrictions, it still doesn’t make sense, nor can i agree with the skill cap. Ultimately though it no longer matters seeing as how i am buying the full version today. I just wanted to express my opinion is all.

On July 23, 2009 at 4:55 pm

The restrictions are a pain, but completely worth it. In silk road online the game was completely taken over by gold farmers/ sellers- it was so populated by them they filled all the worlds completely so that you had to pay for a special item to bypass the full server message.

So just be thankful that blizzard keeps these scammers at a bare minimum.

On August 9, 2009 at 10:50 am

wow, this sux, made lvl 20 in like 2 days. I am playing just to fight off boredom . I don’t have money for my real account right this moment and made lvl 20 in like 2 days. now I’m capped, grrr. I agree, make it lvl 40 or 50 cap, mabe even lvl 60. I can understand not being able to trade, sell, etc. I can understand even not allowing whispers unless other party acts, etc but I can lvl realy quick. I just took the moment to try other configs on my char while waiting to get $$, now I’m back to being boored

On September 14, 2009 at 4:23 am

This is so stupid!! I also reached lvl 20 for two characters in about 6 days. WTF??? Why can’t i even ride a horse, when other lvl 20 chars, who pay for the game, can? I have 5 gold in my pocket but it is useless… This game suck! Really suck!

On November 27, 2009 at 10:26 am

like ruPaul

I have just one thing to say

Trial only server
no restrictions, trolls gone wild,

one pvp, one pvprp one normal one normal rp

then you can use mail and all types of stuff, go to 80 whatever and then if you want to pay up you pick a full frontal server!

On December 2, 2009 at 4:35 pm

You got to be kidding me…

Level 60 cap on a trial account?! Hahaha. Try Shaiya or Jade Dynasty. Free to play MMOs that are large scale and good fun.

really though… increasing the level cap… XD

On December 5, 2009 at 5:40 am

Reached level 20 yesterday…played for hours today without noticing my xp wasn’t increasing. This sux. Level 20 can’t do anything. No point in playing anymore, except to do some random bgs.

On December 10, 2009 at 5:02 pm

I wholeheartedly agree good sir. Glad to see someone on this comment list has some courtesy and respect. I mean come on people, it’s a trial for God’s sake! They can’t let people do everything for free when others pay 15 bucks a month for it! I too will purchase this game once my trial is up. “The game is just that cool.”

I dont think that this limited game play demonstates the game very well it made me frustrated that there were all these things that dont work that were their and i didnt know why i spent hours gathering herbs wondering why my level wasnt going up i figured i would play my guy then buy the game but with all the stuff i couldnt do i feel i have wasted a lot of hours playing a caracter that is useless and would have to start again if i buy the game so probaly wont buy it right away if i do

On December 21, 2009 at 8:38 am

I have been playing for about half a week now and i just noticed that my character can’t use a fishing pole… Are there any limitations to fishing skill on trial accounts or will i just have to do something before i can get fishing?

On January 2, 2010 at 1:11 am

you have to buy a fishing pole and right-click on it in your bag so you equip it. Then you can fish.. By the time you read this though, your trial account should be up.. hahaha..

On January 2, 2010 at 11:04 am

If we reach lvl 20 and keep fight will we get xp when we subscrive???

Leif Hunt

On January 21, 2010 at 8:54 am

Trial Server, very good idea. Im a long time Warcraft player who just came back to warcraft only to find out about the new trial restrictions and it does suck…hard. Once my bank clears the upgrade the restrictions will be lifted but this wait is seriously making me want to change my mind about coming back to Warcraft. I would think this over a little harder Blizz, there has to be a better way. You have turned the trial experience into something that actually turns people away from Warcraft.

On September 12, 2010 at 3:54 pm

Now all of you know when you first started playing the game and you got about fifteen lvls in….you thought this was a bad ass game. Its just a trial…if u want to play more and proceed in the game of warcraft…BUY THE FULL VERSION!!!!

On October 3, 2010 at 5:03 am

Hi, i have created a trial account, and also paid for the account to be a normal account, but it still says my account is a trial account for 9 days.. Does anyone here know if its posible to turn trial mode off? :)

On October 16, 2010 at 11:33 pm

I started two days ago and I’m already at level 20. I wanted to see how far I could get within the 10 days, but it looks like that won’t be happening :P

On October 22, 2010 at 6:33 am

im on a trial and im a troll hunter and i cant get skils for my pet and all that there was only 2 skills could get the rest dont appear

On October 26, 2010 at 10:26 pm

trial account hunter and for some reason i cant abandon my starter pet.
jw why this is going 0n and if i can fix it??????

On October 27, 2010 at 3:16 pm

I’ve been playing a trial account, and have been thus far disappointed with the game as a whole. I haven’t seen anything to make me think it’s better than any of the FTP MMORPGS that I’ve been playing.
I’ve been told it really picks up around level 30, but being at level 20 now, I’m not convinced it’s worth shelling out on unless I can be sure that I’m missing something vital. Trial version has been fun…but then again if I just wanted to go around for random easy killing and run errands half-way across the continent I’d go back to playing Runescape.

On November 14, 2010 at 6:10 pm

Blizzard have done exactly the right thing… The amount of gold spammers has really gone down. As for the people complaining about the level cap… The origional game is so cheap now you can pick it up for a few dollars, dont be a cheapskate, if you like it enough to play it to 20 you can probably rest assured it will be just as entertaining the other 60 levels (at this point). As for other MMORPGS better better, that could well be true, but I have found most MMORPGS really let you down at the end (once you reach the highest level), this is not the case with WoW (in my opinion). A trial is supposed to be a “taste” of the game, I think it does that well. As for not being able to chat in general or whisper people… Thats a shame, but that was ruined by people, not by blizzard.

On December 11, 2010 at 1:04 pm

On December 14, 2010 at 12:33 pm

Hey so I just read this and m like off! I just spent the last.. what 1 hour trying to find out why i cannot change my hunters pet then i get told its restricted by a friend?! this is a load of bull! Bring the normal WoW back!!! The more restrictions there is the less people will play the frikin game! Blizzard were did u go rong!

Still currently pissed,

On December 21, 2010 at 8:42 am

Since the trail accounts can NEVER give gold to other characters, or influence the economy…why limit trade skills or gold cap?

Goldsellers could keep adding new 10 day trial accounts to a battlenet account, accruing 10gold on each.
Are they then able to turn the trail account into paid version and cash in?

If not, I see no danger. At all.
why not let tail accounts buy things off auction, but never be able to sell anything…just to be able to try it out.

As for level cap,
the longer a potential addict/cutomer plays the trail the more likely they are to become a follower of the game and open their wallet. I say it’s wise to give new players on trail more time to form emotional attachments to the other players/guilds on the realm (let them join guilds).

Have the level cap be set at 60,
but don’t allow them to influence economy in any way.
Let trial players become a legitimate community for oldworld raiding, like it was in vanilla-wow.

They’ll exhaust the content quickly and want to play burning crusade, wotlk and cataclysm.

Give trial accounts a free month of play,
and blizzard creates a powerful suction that rips away the customers of every other MMORPG. The deep pool of trial players will switch to paying for wow after they’ve exhausted the oldworld 1-60 content.

This is not just a trail.
This is a BOOTCAMP for creating wow addiction/loyalty.

You are not a TOURIST here.
There is NO ESCAPE, you are here for LIFE.

This is what’s needed to stop player churn,
if someone burns through cataclysm content and doesn’t want to subscribe until next expansion, a one month no-limits (escept for no affecting economy) trial would keep them loyal to wow, stop blizzard from losing them to the competition.

Blizzard would have nothing to lose by increasing it to 1 month,
eventually people get bored of 60lvl cap and start paying.

On January 14, 2011 at 2:16 pm

My WoW trial ended today, honestly I don’t really think the limitations are that bad, I mean, its a trial account, what I found rather anoying though was the fact I was almost unable to communicate with other players.

On January 14, 2011 at 2:21 pm

And setting the level up to 60 is stupid, honestly, it’s a trial.

IMO the game is good, if I had the time and money I’d like to play it.

On January 21, 2011 at 6:05 am

we need to do a petition
raise the limmit level to 30
raise the maximum amount of gold to 100g
and i personaly will love everything about blizzard.. still cataclysm it’s just amazing.. if i have the time and money too. best mmorpg i’ve tried lotro,GW and does not compare to WoW cataclysm ftw low requirements amazing gui interface, professions EVERYTHING IT’S AMAZING!!

On January 24, 2011 at 6:06 pm

I was trying the game recently, and it is amazing. I’ll agree to an idea above; separate trial server. That would allow gold farmers attempting to get rich fail miserably, and we could still level and do whatever we want within the 10 or 14 day trial!

All I can do now is just run around and either do a lot of low level quests (all a lvl 20 can do) or attempt to explore a little.

I’m a lvl 20 Tauren Druid on Cairne, and today I went from Undercity, crossing the Burning Steppes, and began my own raid on Stormwind. One small issue is that guards kill me in one hit. If we had our own server, oh they’d be dead! Laugh at that, f’ing NPC Guards!

WoW ruined it

On January 27, 2011 at 6:06 pm

WoW really ruined WoW, when Lich King came out you could do so many fun things,I’m on my 5th day of trial and I met this Worgen girl and I cant even talk to her and she can talk to me. So unfair! I was never a spammer! They should give you one chance, and if they catch you spamming then bye-bye chat, but they changed that and now trials cannot chat. WoW really failed this time. I’m not even a spammer. Its WoW’s loss people are quiting everyday

On February 15, 2011 at 4:07 pm

Played in a four days to level 20, that sucks!!!!

On April 2, 2011 at 12:30 am

I too reached lvl 20 with my tauren warrior in day and a half. However, I dissagree with those ones who say this trial sucks. I learned a lot about my warrior in 20 lvls and not just that, Ialso experienced goblin zeppelins, easy and astounding missions, big cities etc. In my case, I play on a private servers (they aren’t so bad if u don’t have money for official servers, so if u think trials suck and would rather experience the game without the loss of money visit wowbeez) but official servers are far more better cause nothing is gifted to you and u become better player that way. Another thing not to bore urself is: do everything u can on your specific char which has trial, max it so u don’t have to do it once u load your acc with money (to prevent unnececary loss of money and time) and if u still have time on trial make another char and repeat the process. That way u won’t get bored

On April 17, 2011 at 5:52 pm

II’ve been playing MMORPGS for years, but not WoW, so I figured I’d give it a go and I love the game, its so well created and thought out. But I managed to hit the level 20 + 100 skinning/leather tanning + 10gold cap in 1 day. What am I supposed to do for the rest of the trial? do it all over again, I doubt it. I couldnt talk to anyone, I couldnt joing any teams, I couldnt trade or buy anything, I was just doing quests all day long and though Im an avid quester, it lost its charm quickly. I enjoyed my time with the trial, but if they are going to be this harsh to new-comers, what is the game going to be like?

I can tbelieve the agressive language and rude people on this site..I have played DDO, and rarely are people as rude as i have found here..Noobs are not liked. Trial acccounts are hated..I have ahd people kill me while trying to learn the game..its awful, but I do love the game

On May 10, 2011 at 1:46 pm

Rofl and everyone that hates this is a ****ing gold farmer or one of the ****ers that makes an account to hack or spam….. GTFO…. cry babys

On May 17, 2011 at 1:37 pm

wtf….i just got the trail yesterday and im lvl 20….nothing to do now

buy it

On May 19, 2011 at 11:04 am

Well if ur level 20 and still have few cata left, try playing other classes and races. Is just buy it… Stop complaining…

On May 30, 2011 at 10:32 pm

There is no reson even to play anyone more whats the point if you cant talk to people around you when you want to

On June 5, 2011 at 9:04 pm

The caps kind of suck, but whatevs, If you are only trying it(as per what you do with a “trial account”) then it doesn’t really matter if you can’t trade or do anything. The only people really pissed about this are gold farmers. Also World of Warcraft is the easiest MMORPG out of them all, seriously. Four hours to get to level 20, it tells you the pros/cons of equipping different armor (instead of making you figure it out) and you can’t play for 10 minutes without half a dozen guild invites or people offering help. Also, Pro tip, make a female character with a female(sounding at least) name and ask for gold. The nerds may want your character to dance naked for minute or five but hell, easy money.

On June 6, 2011 at 6:57 am

Well i actually live wow it rock and thank god that that they did that as i have been hacked before and its no doubt in my mind it was by gold farming hack s and even thought i have come through i think that’s best for all of our interest specially for those who earn their money the right way and don’t want the game economy to go bad as if people get richer than prices go up for those fair gaming players :)

On June 24, 2011 at 12:23 pm

are you ing kidding me? My plan was to play for about a week of the trial and get to at least level thirty and then upgrade to full but then the Level cap is mother ing twenty, BAH!

And the new update suck, there’s no1 on accept yourself even on all of the server that i tried, no1 except NPC

On June 29, 2011 at 3:16 am

whats the phrase? gift horse? mouth? You get to try their game for free, albeit a limited version with no obligations at all? I really dont understand all the problems, you like, u buy. you dont…. jog on?

On July 6, 2011 at 8:49 pm

it does kinda suck that i found all this out now after about 5 days but i read the reasons and the responses and yes it is a basic good idea but then again even with a trial you could be lienient enought to leave the capping at lvl 20 or so and not profession lvl cause they will cap them selves thus having the player feel accomplished when its capped to the trials limitations. i hope to get the money for upgrade cause i have 6 lvl 20s all with mounts and most with high profession lvls (high for the trial) the trial should include the two new races seeing as its a trial and with all the other restricions all that will do is give people a taste of the worgen and goblin like the other races. i realy hope blizzard read this i put some thought into it and analyzed both sides to the restricions. reasonable but disapointing but in a trial its expected when you love it and cant afford to pay at the time being. so people stop trolling blizzard please they want to add players yes but they want to keep them too and i see that this is a real good way to do so.

On August 13, 2011 at 9:18 am

The trial was absolutely awesome for the first 2 days, I managed to hit level 20, bought my self a mount, got a ton of gold, and got pretty involved in the game. However, once I reached the end of what is possible on a trial, I was clueless as to what to do next. I couldn’t join a guild or try and make some more money through trading and auctions etc. Obviously if I had the full game I would have the ability to do things like this, but if this is how harshly blizzard acts towards the new-comers, I wonder how long it will be before the full version feels the same way?

On August 18, 2011 at 1:18 am

I’m an old WoW player from the moment they turned on the servers. No 60′s, no tier gear… I remember when they added Ony to give people something else to do while the developers scrambled to add new stuff.

I stopped playing a couple of years ago and decided to start playing again… saddly, I lost my old account and can’t seem to recover it. Guess it got hacked while I was away.

Anywho, the trial restrictions are a bit too much. If the GMs would do their jobs and monitor the game, it wouldn’t be an issue. I filed a support ticket earlier today and it took 2.5 hours for me to get some idiot that just fed me automated responses.

I’ve been on the trial for 3 days and I’ve filled my quota on my server for level 20′s, skill capped, etc etc. I know what’s coming so I’m not worried about it, but for someone that’s never played before… you’re getting nothing. Can’t do dungeons, can’t experience guilds (let the Guild Master have the option to take in trial accounts), you can’t use the AH, can’t send mail (even to your other toons)… can’t really do much of anything.

It DOES get better, people… but with the restrictions on trial accounts, you’d never know.

Wow is easily the best mmorpg i’ve played over the years but instead of a trial it should just be cheepet to play for a month then theres no reason not to get it or change it back to 10 day trial but on a trial account server sorted cappesh

by the way did any one play the murloc game of wow where you was in a 2d world as a murloc i think it got banned?

On September 1, 2011 at 12:49 pm

I have had this game for about a month now and have bought the full game. My friend also has the game but he is trial and we both have lvl 20 bracket twinked rogues and we are unable to queue for a bg together… when I click join as group nothing happens, no red writting or writting in the chat bar. Any ideas????

On September 6, 2011 at 2:42 pm

I’ve played wow off and on sense it came out. After cata and the shattering I’ve lost most interest in the game. More so because of the Shattering because I liked the way it was. But I do like to come back and play around once in a while so I made an UD Mage with a plan. And its working so far. Trials are now free to play forever so I decided to make a twink as best as I can. It took me quite a few kills about 2100 lvl 13 and under mobs, minus a few rare spawns for the gold. That was the main goal obviously: Get 10g before I hit 20 so I could stop the xp gain and do BGs. Took me a week i think. Couple hours a day. All you can do is vendor and quest for the cash. I tried skinning and vendoring, but killing humanoids for the cloth stacks served a faster route and more profitable. To my surprise, Blizz didn’t restrict the xp stop for trials.(yay for not wasting my time). I tried researching it, but couldnt find anything on it, so it was a gamble. Woot! Now with the xp stop I’ve been doing some random dungeon ques gearing up and questing inbetween for the greens/blues rewards that blizzard came out with in the new shattering quests. Yeah, I wont be as twinked as some people with Heirlooms and higher proffession perks but, its a trade-off I’m ok with, being I wont be playing that much anyhow. Now next thing to find out is if I can buy the heirlooms from the pvp vendors with Honor points, and what the honor point cap will be on a Free to play account.
…To Be Continued

Hey could any1 get me a guide on how to obtain 10 gold before lvl 20? I keep ending up with accounts with 5 gold… fml please help anyone!!!

On October 9, 2011 at 9:30 am

As stated in my previous paragraph: You have to farm lots of mobs that dont give you xp. For example: A lvl 13 mob wont give you xp if you’re lvl 19, but a lvl 14 will. Quest till 15, do random dungeons till 19…Leave the dungeon if its lookin like you’re gonna level to 20 from it. Thats the faster way to get gold before the lvl 13 mob farming.

On October 12, 2011 at 8:00 am

Oh snap they removed it i got the 10 g at level 19 a few days ago i bought it and today i can get xp again

ok im sick and tired of these trial limits and also tired of the people who keep calling everyone who’s complaning gold farmers, are you blind people its a 12 pegi game and they think that 12 year olds are to be able to afford to get the game and pay monthly, and have the skills to gold farm/sell, we people who believe this, you are all morons, lvl 20 you just need to look at the ear you get, its all s*** everytime i join a BG i get slaughtered because of heirlooms on newly created players, give us chat, no gold limit, i can understand stand trade limits, but you dont need a lvl limit are a gold limit are the inablility to talk to players, if you want people selling gold to other people all you needed to get rid of was trade, there was no reason for the lvl cap or anything other than trade im sorry blizz, this is sad but true, i beleive im speaking for most people who are disapointed with the trail, why did you have to be a bully by distroying our hopes for the game as well as WoWs popularity, thanks to you blizzard, warcraft has been ruined because of these restrictions, a crap trail= very low popularity + a dicrease in players, its all to do with the trail, please blizzard here me out, and make the game better and try to see our point of view, if anyone finds anything i just said offencive please feel free to bull me but i believe im intitaled to say my opinion.

I am so mad. My Character’s name was LindanaMonro and I was a level 41 druid. I was on free trial and then my mom got one month and didn’t pay the rest because she wasn’t going with the reccurring thing. I am 100% pissed at blizzard because I GOT BANNED for NO REASON. IT SAID I WAS TRADING GOLD FOR REAL LIFE INFORMATION WHEN I WOULD NEVER EVER DO SUCH A THING. my mom thinks its because I didn’t add more membership to it. but when I looked on the site it says my ban thing was PERMANENT. I DIDNT DO ANYTHING WRONG!
