Xbox 360 HD DVD Player Price Dropped Again

The Xbox 360’s HD DVD add-on has been dropped in price again; this time around it’s a substantial $50 drop (effective in the US and Canada) from $179 to $129. I’m a bit peeved since I bought one not too long ago for $179, but I did get all three Bourne movies for free, so that makes up for it.

Dropping the price simultaneously helps clear stock and increases the format’s market penetration – two conflicting points for those who would argue that this paves the way for a Blu-ray add-on or that this is an attempt to breathe further life into the format.

It seems clear to me that Blu-ray has/will emerge as the victor in this format war, but for $129, the existing catalog and the 5 free HD DVD offer that is ongoing, this really isn’t a half-bad deal.

$129?

that’s not even close to good enough. HD-DVD is finished and several months from now (if not sooner) retailers will have effectively removed that product off their shelves. Which by that time the rest of the studios won’t have much choice but to completely abandon HD-DVD and MS wants $129??

i haven’t invested in either format yet but MS is gonna have to do better for a ‘Dead Man Walking’ add-on than $129.

If they knocked the price down to $99 with the five free movies I *might* consider picking one up. Given that there is every indication that this thing will be a doorstop within a year, at that price you can figure you paid $20 / movie. This is one of what will likely be a series of last, desperate attempts to sustain a dying format. This issue won’t be won on price alone.

I think the price is still high. I’d pay say $50 for a HD-DVD player right now.

Yeah, 50$, but only if it still comes with at least 5 movies included.

$50 seems a bit unreasonable when you think of the logistics and all. The $100 price range, when you get five free movies, isn’t all that terrible considering it doesn’t preclude you from buying a Blu-ray player or anything.

i agree with Chris. although i’d love to see it at $50 (who wouldn’t?) that’s just not practical. At that price MS would surely be losing money on each unit sold which is why they’re desperately slashing the price now.

I wouldn’t pay a single penny over $99 however i’d expect it to hit a rock bottom price of $79 towards Xmas to clear out any remaining inventory if there’s any left.
