Xbox 360: Remember To Clear Your Cache

360logo.jpg

This week, I decided to dust off my Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion disc and replay the entire game. I entirely forgot how frustrating the game freezes were with that game. I made it 80% of the way through the main quest before I started having issues with the game freezing and it was happening several times every hour or so. Probably the only remedy for this would be the Xbox 360 cache clear code that was discovered long ago by Hexus. This method is the only way to entirely clear the Xbox 360 cache.

Take the following steps to clear your cache:

Go to the system blade and then select memory.

Press Y on the HD symbol and then press X,X,Left Bumper, Right Bumper, X,X. Once you do this a messsage will appear saying: Do you want to perform maintenance on your Xbox 360 storage devices?

Keep in mind that this method will also clear out all software updates, but it’s worth that cost. After you clear things out, you’ll experience far less issues when it comes to the system crashing or screens freezing. If anyone knows of a better method, feel free to drop a comment below. It’s easy to forget that sometimes your system may need a little extra maintenance to keep it running smoothly.

I have slow internet so losing my software updates would pain me : (

That sucks. It is kind of a pain to have to re-do all the software updates. There are other methods of clearing caches, but none that work this well.

all you need to do is hold down button A during the loading screen until you see Bethesda logo. this clears the cahce and doesnt affect any ogther systme updates.

William

On January 5, 2008 at 1:05 pm

holding down A method works some, but doesn’t clear the entire cache, which honestly seems to give me less problems.

Will I also lose DLC if I do this ?

William

On January 5, 2008 at 5:39 pm

No you will not lose DLC. You’ll just lose the updates which is a pain in the ass I guess, but it usually takes less than 10 or 20 seconds to do an update.

i clear my cache at least every week…i have alotta gamez, and i download ALOT…so everytime i clear my cache it makes all my games run ALOT quicker, and my xbox responds better insteda freezin…i reccommend doin it 100%!!!!…tha only thing u lose is software updates!!! which can b redownloaded and r REALLY QUICK DEPENDING ON UR INTERNET CONNECTION!!!!…and everytime u clear ur cache u gain a lil/alot of hard drive space, which may b needed or useful 2 sum people…

Kischen

On March 16, 2008 at 6:45 am

Amazingly enough xBox support gave this to me as a solution to the “Disc Dirty/Damaged” issue. I have not had any issues with it erasing software updates, its essentially like disk clean up or defragging on your PC. So, yeah, a little routine maintenance never hurts…. too much.

:?: I heard that it will delete your gamer profiles, is that true? :?:

jonny

On July 8, 2008 at 4:21 pm

Will this delete my gamer profiles, gamerscore and saved games?

noemailforyou

On July 25, 2008 at 4:29 pm

No it will not delete your profile. How many times do people have to say it only affect the UPDATES FOR GAMES.

anyone know if some of the DLC like nights of the nine and the others will run without doing the update after clearing the cache? I still use the cheats so I dont want the latest patch

Might as well buy a bloody PC.

Brittany

Hi guys,
I have the same “Unreadable Disc” problem but i dont have a harddrive. How am i suppose to clear my cashe? I tried to Format the memory stick but with no results. Am i missing something ?

Owner

On September 18, 2008 at 10:54 am

Steveo, yeah, your DVD drive is screwed up.
Or your disk is too scratched.

And for those asking about their profile: yuor profile in ON Xbox live, not on your console. So no, it wont be deleted.

In the worst case, you pick it yup back thats it

Just thought I would let you guys know that this worked with my NBA Live 09 problem.

ElroyCOhen

On October 8, 2008 at 12:59 pm

Had the disc unreadable problem with NHL 09. Thought it was the game. EB Games was nice enough to replace it even though it was past their exchange period. Guy suggesting clearing the cache if it didn’t work. Game still didn’t work. Cleared the cache. No problems now! I read on another forum something about 360 drives not being able to read dual-layered discs. Thought I might have a pricey problem on my hands. No problems at all though. Clearing the cache works like a charm. Anyone know why clearing the cache fixes disc problems?

So I’m having a problem with rock band. When there are a lot of notes coming the screen stutter’s in the note section. Nowhere else but in the note section. I have a 1080p tv and have tried all of the different settings as far as resolution. I have also tried clearing the cache. Any ideas?

So i have this problem with Disk Dirty or Damaged with all games brand new or old. The clearing cache didn’t work I don’t think….i got here because i’m researching the issue…my particular case has just been getting worse and worse over the last 4 months or so…it’s really bad now. I think it’s the DVD Drive in the xbox…it’s just going bad and getting worse… :(

On November 15, 2008 at 9:38 pm

hey guys. I cleared my cache to play Elder Scroll:Oblivion. now it’s saying it’s missing data and won’t load. Suggestions?

katie

On November 21, 2008 at 5:09 pm

basically, clearing the cache really works.. However, there are times that you need to clear the cache twice before it will fully works.
Anyway about the disc uneadable issues, just take out the HD try to play a game disc w/out the HD and check if its going to work or not, if it still doing the same thing, ya need to send the console in for repair

Yeah, if your havin problems with your xbox crashin, freezin, or other things, get rid of it and buy a computer so you dont have those problems. These consoles arent all they`re cracked up to be !!!!

Josh

On January 1, 2010 at 11:22 am

delete some other halo 3 stuff…halo 3 limits the amount of things you can save from it, so if you have lots of film clips and screenshots and downloads, you might be full

On April 3, 2011 at 9:41 pm

hi i cleared my cache and now i cant update any of my games to play on xbox live. does anyone know what i can do???

lewis

On June 28, 2011 at 7:29 pm

are there security issues with removing updates? are they privacy or basic gameplay/software updates?

Landon

On July 5, 2011 at 9:58 pm

So I borowwed my brothers CoD WaW to play some zombies with my wife, and everytime I try to play it, it gives me the disc read error. It will slao let me play the first 5 campaign levels, but nothing past that.
Will clearing the cache allow us to play? Cause I don’t have internet anymore, so I won’t be able to update my console for a while.

3 questions:
1:If I Clear the Cache, what are the negative effects?
2: Is it possible to Clear without losing my DLC?
3: I pre-ordered the Channeler and the crystal tattoo. Do I still get to keep them if I clear the cache?

Whats the difference between doing X X LB RB X X and just pressing Y for device options then pressing A on clear system cache?

Dawn

On January 28, 2012 at 11:45 pm

one thing, title updates, you will have to re-get them or not be able to play anything you saved when you had the title update.
