Xbox Boss Thinks Tomb Raider Could Counter Uncharted 4

Microsoft’s Phil Spencer believes that Rise of the Tomb Raider could be the Xbox One’s answer to Uncharted.

That, at least, was the sentiment that came across in a recent interview where Spencer, the head of Xbox, addressed Microsoft’s recent acquisition of Rise of the Tomb Raider as a Xbox One timed exclusive. When asked directly about Rise of the Tomb Raider serving as a counterpoint to Sony and Naughty Dog’s Uncharted series, Spencer confirmed that he does see Tomb Raider possibly filling that role.

“Totally,” said Spencer. “I’m a big fan of Uncharted and I wish we had an action adventure game of that ilk. We’ve started some, and we’ve looked at them. But we don’t have one today of that quality. This is an opportunity.”

Spencer would also try to assure Tomb Raider fans that Microsoft’s move to more closely connect the franchise to the Xbox One wasn’t done with any sort of malicious intent toward PlayStation customers.

“This whole thing that, like we just somehow found something that Sony fans love and said hey, if we just drop millions of dollars then they can’t go play the game, that’s not how it played out,” he said. “There’s nothing we did somebody else could not have done.”

Granted, some would still likely argue that this move is unsavory, but that does little to change the fact that PlayStation fans will have to wait a bit longer to get their hands on the next chapter of the rebooted Tomb Raider.

The guy is full of it. If he wanted this to be XB’s answer to Uncharted then why didn’t they make it exclusively exclusive instead of just timed? With the way the whole thing was revealed and the fact they refuse to call it timed and instead chose to use the word “duration” makes me think that they were hoping to fool people into thinking you could only play TR on the XB1 and get them to buy one.

Uncharted has no competition. Tomb Raider couldn’t even carry the shadow of the Uncharted franchise.

fethski is right. PS4 owners won’t even have to choose between the two games. At most, they’ll wait a while. And they’ll happily do that while playing Uncharted. It’s doubtful anyone would have picked up an Xbox for this game even if it was exclusive, and since it is only a timed exclusive, they have zero reason to do so.
