Games With Gold Adding New Restrictions, Xbox One in June
Xbox One’s Games With Gold program will launch next month.
The announcement. came from Microsoft which confirmed that its subscription game service would finally be coming to its new console sometime this June. While this is likely to be welcome news to Xbox One owners, June will also be bring some across the board changes to the program involving the level of access users will have to the games offered by the service.
Most notably, subscribers will now only have access to their Games With Gold titles while their Gold subscription stays live. Any games downloaded for free under the Games of Gold umbrella will be locked down again if a player’s Gold subscription is cancelled or expires. This differs from the past standard which allowed Games With Gold titles to be downloaded and kept forever.
That being the case, this new standard will bring Games With Gold more in line with Sony’s successful PlayStation Plus service and could potentially allow Microsoft to upgrade the program’s offerings to include newer games. Games With Gold had, in the past, fallen under fire for its tendency to give away nothing but older titles that many subscribers had already played.
This announcement came alongside several other big pieces of news from Microsoft, including new plans to release a Kinect-less Xbox One and to allow the use of streaming services such as Netflix, HBO Go and Twitch without a Gold Membership. All in all, it would seem that the company is intent on fulfilling past promises to respond to user “feedback”.
