Xbox One Will Only Support LIVE in Certain Countries At Launch

The bad P.R. hits just keep coming for embattled Microsoft. Not only will the new console cost more, potentially share your personal data, and make it difficult to trade used games (a fact that Sony has made hay of with this parody video), the console just plain won’t work, if you happen to live in the wrong country.

According to Joystiq, the Xbox One’s always-on game registration feature will only be available in 21 countries at launch. If you happen to live in a country like, say, Portugal, you’re completely out of luck, and you won’t be able to play any games on the console.

Consult the list below or the map above to see if the country you live in happens to be on the list. Of course, this news has already been met with a pro-PS4 troll graphic, which is also below.

  • Austria
  • Belgium

I realize this is a multimedia device and not a game console, but I don’t get anything Microsoft is doing with this thing.

Microsoft later released a statement saying “We understand your frustration but our market research shows us these are the areas of the world with the most stable internet connections and these are the people our console is designed for. If you live in an unsupported country, we invite you to try out the Xbox 360 as it is still supported in all areas of the world”.

Is it just me or Microsoft wants everybody to hate them? They got about half the world down already.

Looks like the Indians running their call centers and the Chinese manufacturing it won’t be able to work the damn thing. Sounds like Microsoft needs to rethink their strategy.

Wow this has passed the point of being funny and started to just be really kind of sad. I think we need to stage an intervention for microsoft, talk about their addiction to terrible, terrible ideas and about how we’ll forgive them for all of them except Windows ME and Windows 8 if they’ll just get some help.

So I was going to dazzle everyone with my wit and creativity in laughing at micro$oft, then you lot beat me to it. It genuinely seems that Micro$oft wants the Xbone to fail. I can’t imagine a worse product to be peddled by anyone- but to be fair, I can’t imagine how Micro$oft thought they could peddle this in the first place. Dangit- fine! I’ll give humour a shot!

“Micro$oft- so anti-consumer they won’t even let A HUNDRED AND SEVENTY THREE country’s citizens use their damn machine- AT ALL. Are you on the shortlist for abuse? ARE *YOU*?”

“Micro$oft’s Xbone isn’t available in 173 countries. Not sure if I feel respected or insulted.”

“Micro$oft- attacking their customers all the way to bankruptcy (Sony- pleasing their customers all the way to the bank)”

“Micro$oft- merely slashing their customer numbers with attacks not enough- now serving ONLY CERTAIN addicts since 2013″

I… I can’t think of any more. And I’m STILL laughing (*trollface*). Anyone else?

Did Microsoft merge with AOL or get bought by Donald Trump? Those are the only reasons I can think of that they would go from being at least semi-competent if a little greedy, to launching possibly the biggest failure in the history of videogames. Sure, other consoles like the Atari 5200 and the Gizmondo will be bigger money-losers, but considering how much experience Microsoft has now got in the console market, to release something THIS unpopular with as many flaws as it has is actually remarkable and somewhat sad.

Sony won this generation’s war before even making any announcement on the PS4. Xbox now is seemingly willing to rub salt into its own wounds.

Serious question: How many boneheaded policies do you have to rack up before you realize your fundamental strategy is flawed?

Also, I’m starting to wonder why MS fired that Orth guy because not only is MS carrying forward with always-on, but the company’s official policy seems to actually be “deal with it.” I don’t exactly see a positive message to customers when they tell people to stick with the 360 if they don’t like it.

Are you guys for real? lol. Who cares if South Koreans can’t use Xbox? This is an AMERICAN console primarily aimed at Americans. Besides, Koreans are too interested in playing 15-year-old RPGs in dingy internet cafes and singing I’m So Ronery to care about or even fundamentally understand the Xbox One. It’s like being upset because some cannibal tribe in Timbucktwo don’t have Netflix.

Nobody’s going to buy an Xbox on the grounds that they can play some dog eaters who don’t even know how to speak English. They’re buying it so they can play Call of Duty. american sales of Xbox alone will outnumber worldwide sales of any other console in history – FACT.

As a brazilian I can say I’m surprised Brazil is in the list. But the big part of people here have slow internet, I don’t see the point.

This just shows how well thought this console is.
Sigh.

Microsoft!!! whot the hell are you doin’ !!!! are you declaring a war against your fans or whot would you call it???? should I consider a think again ???
funny thing is that Microsoft’s statement that ” you can try 360!! ” ohhh bless!! thank you I can’t describe my gratefulness for this generosity, and whot if I was a live member since 2008! and was offline since 2006! only if these new games shall be available for 360 too then it would make some sense!! otherwise you’ve sentenced your franchise a steep short term stall!!!
thanx anyway!!

@lol. you never cease to make me laugh. sad fact is that south korea and japan, two countries not on the list have by far more stable internet connections then north America. and as GMA stated in a previous article. the new COD is coming to PS3 & 360 so I would imagine that most of the COD fanbase will buy a copy for their current gen machines.
