XCOM Dev Firaxis Confirms New Game to be Shown at Gamescom

XCOM developer Firaxis is working on an unannounced project which they plan to reveal at the upcoming Gamescom event. Based on a tease of the game earlier this year (via RPS), the game in development is largely believed to be the successor to XCOM: Enemy Unknown.

Publisher 2K Games confirmed that Firaxis would be showing off the game alongside The Bureau: XCOM Declassified, NBA 2K14, and WWE 2K14 as a hands-off presentation.

The project may be called XCOM: Enemy Within, based on a listing of the title that appeared on the Korean ratings board earlier this week (via CVG). A machine translation follows:

Strategy Simulation Game software is “XCOM series” in the form of a newly-developed TPS as latest action video games.

Given that the “TPS” in that sentence more than likely refers to “third person shooter”, and the reference may well pertain to The Bureau: XCOM Declassified, which is a third-person shooter, and not be the actual name of an upcoming XCOM game, if there is one.

XCOM: Enemy Unknown was released to widespread acclaim. We gave the game a 90/100 in our review of the game, which you can read here.

I’m actually a little disappointed it’s a new game as I was hoping for a full expansion to Enemy Unknown, whose base game is great but addons can easily make it even better with new maps, weapons, research, enemies, etc.

“Widespread acclaim?” More like widespread payola. XCOM: EU tied with Dishonored for the title of most overhyped, under-delivering failfest of the year.
