Yep, PS3 Will be Supported Through At Least 2015

It’s either confirmation that Sony’s PS2 policy is being extended to the current generation, or that we will have to wait a bit longer before we see PS4, but make of this what you will. Gamespot has been told outright by PlayStation VP of hardware marketing John Koller that support for Playstation 3 will continue well into 2015, possibly longer.

“We’re going to continue supporting the PS3 for the next few years,” Koller said. “Absolutely. And we’re going to continue supporting it not only that long, but as long as there is a development spigot that’s running hot. And I can tell you right now, the development spigot for PS3 is very hot. A lot of great games coming. Same thing with PS2… it’s kind of stuck around as that old warrior, many years after its launch. But there’s still games launching for it.”

Weelllll, but the thing is, with 153.86 million in sales, Playstation 2 is the best-selling console ever made. So it made a ton of sense for Sony to continue supporting it with new games well into the Playstation 3 era. Playstation 3 on the other hand has sold only 63.9 million, well below Playstation 1′s 102.49 million and even behind Xbox 360′s 68.3 million. That’s hardly evidence that “the development spigot for PS3 is very hot.” In fact, it suggests the opposite, that people just aren’t that into it.

I am obviously not a mind reader, but my feeling is that Sony’s hope is for PS3 to become a lower cost alternative to PS4, as evidenced by the recently unveiled newest model which will clock in at $179.99. That would help drive up overall company sales up even if PS4 doesn’t fly off the shelves. In other words, brace yourself, gamers. There is probably no way PS4 will come in at Wii U’s relatively very low price.

nor it should.. sony has probabily adapted itself to the ps3 buisness model. it’s probably profitable for them even tho they sell less and create mosnters of consoles.

I don’t get what you’re saying. PS3 sells at a loss due to the blue ray technology. The reason it makes sense to continue supporting it is because not everyone can afford a PS4, especially if they’ve already cultivated a large library of games for PS3. It’s counter-intuitive to put the nix on PS3 when it’s still selling by the bucketload and, crucially, is still selling GAMES by the bucketload. If you have the choice between selling games for a console that already exists and people already own, or betting the house on the next console which thus far nobody has been able to tell us anything about – especially during an economic downturn – then clearly you’re going to give yourself the best outlet possible, which is PS3.

As for ‘creating monsters of consoles’, I haven’t got a clue what you’re going for with that.
