You Can Pre-order Mass Effect 3 on PSN, Download It on Launch Day

PC gamers have long understood — why wander the maze-like aisles of your local Best Buy, being accosted by sales people who have no idea what inventory is actually in their store, when you could sit at home and let video games come to you? And now Playstation 3 players have a chance at a similar brand of awesome with the release of Mass Effect 3.

Electronic Arts, Sony and BioWare are giving players the ability to pre-order Mass Effect 3 from the Playstation Network now, then download it when it’s released on March 6. The PSN version of the game also will include a few spiffy bonuses just for those of you willing to wait through the download: specifically, an in-game Argus M55 Rifle for slappin’ down baddies, and an exclusive Mass Effect 3 theme for your Playstation’s background. Those items are only available for pre-orders, though.

The only thing about the PSN pre-order scheme that gives me pause is when ME3 will be available. Most PSN updates and downloadable items don’t seem to get added to the network until midday on their launch days — does that mean PSN downloaders are going to be stuck waiting until the afternoon on March 6 to play while the rest of us started at midnight and didn’t sleep?
