You Can Use Your Real Name Online On PlayStation 4 At Launch

Microsoft has made a big deal about the Xbox One allowing you to use your real name online instead of whatever dumb nickname you chose for your gamertag a decade ago, but you won’t be able to do that when that console arrives on November 22. If you get a PS4, however, you will be able to show all the haters who you really are as soon as you boot up your first game on it come November 15. Sony confirmed that detail with Kotaku today.

It isn’t one or the other, of course. You can choose to display your hokey PSN ID instead of your real name in online matches while making your real name display to friends, or only be have your nickname shown to everyone or only use your real name. The point of all this is to have these gaming networks reflect our presence on other modern social networks. When everyone is using weird fake names, gaming might feel less “legitimate” or something to somebody.

Why do I have a feeling that this is going to be the least used feature in gaming.

Another prime example of Sony (microsoft seems just as bad, although they have been playing catch up mostly) finding SOMETHING they can do and Microsoft can’t and promoting it. Just wait till you hear “Play PS4 games on your PS4! Can your Xbox do that?”
