Your Destiny Beta Character is Getting Wiped, Bungie Says

Too bad, so sad if you spent a lot of time developing a Destiny character during the beta period last month: it’s getting deleted.

Bungie announced today in an official blog post that it won’t carry beta characters to the game’s full release when it happens on Sept. 9. So however much time you dumped into Old Russia, well … you get to do that over again. Hope you like Peter Dinklage’s telling you about the Fallen and the Hive all over again. Too bad you don’t get to hear him say “That wizard came from the Moon,” though.

Here’s Destiny’s explanation from its blog for the reason for wiping those characters:

“Tyson Green is a Bungie designer who thinks long and hard about character ownership. He’s said goodbye to hundreds of Guardians throughout the pursuit of Destiny, and dozens of those warriors had evolved well past Level 8. He’s not the reason why your character is gone, but Tyson can explain why our Guardians won’t accompany us on launch day:

“‘Since the Beta, we’ve continued to tune and adjust the game. The way you earn experience has been adjusted up and down a bunch of times. Items have been added and removed. New features toggled. Although there’s no single monumental change, the sum of the tweaks leaves characters from the Beta Build in strange shape that would be confusing at best, broken at worst.’”

Oh well — it’s not like beta characters usually seem to carry over in MMOs. Add your tears for your fallen Guardian to your continual weeping about Destiny not coming to PC.

I don’t see a problem with this. It only took a couple hours to get to max level. I created a character in each race and class and took them all to level 8.
I am far more disappointed that it’s not coming to PC. On the other hand, I needed a reason to buy a next-gen console, anyway.
