Zombie MMO The War Z Coming Thanks to DayZ

The ArmA 2 mod DayZ has shown that there’s a big market for a multiplayer, post-zombie apocalypse game in which players are forced to fight both the undead and one another to survive. And that’s what Hammerpoint Games and Arktos Entertainment plan to create with their newly announced MMO The War Z.

Executive Producer Sergey Titov spoke with IGN about the title, pointing directly to DayZ as helping to make the game possible.

As we saw the popularity of [ArmA 2 mod] DayZ grow, and how players and the community were reacting, we realized two things – first, there was validation that our idea of making a zombie MMO was actually right and that there is a market/player base for it, and second, we decided to abandon the idea of unlocking parts of the map as you progress — rather, the player will be able to freely roam the world and gather information and quests by exploring notes, diaries, etc left behind by both real players and NPCs.

The War Z is set five years after the start of the zombie apocalypse, and though it shares a lot of similarities with DayZ, Titov states that the game will have things to set it apart — like multiple characters and real-world locations (the first game world is called “Colorado,” for example).

And what does Dean “Rocket” Hall, the Bohemia Interactive developer who created DayZ, think about The War Z? PC Gamer caught up with him and asked him how he thought a competitor would affect his mod, which has already garnered some 700,000 players.

I think competition is a healthy thing, and their list of features is ambitious. I’m have been hoping that the gamer response to Day Z has made a few developers, and even a few publishers, raise their eyebrows and question what we consider absolute truths in the industry. Maybe this is the start of that, in that case it is a great thing.”

“But if it is a list of promises, then it’s a bad thing. Because those things are hard to do, and Day Z is only possible because it rests on the shoulders of ten years of development in a fantastic engine. It is one thing to speculate for comment, but it’s something else to promise a feature that hasn’t been developed. Gamers react really badly to that, even when the end result is a good product. They remember and they are harsh critics.

The War Z is currently in alpha and will be released before the end of the year, Titov said.

What do you guys think? Are you interested in another title like DayZ?

I had been asking for a realistic zombie apocalypse game for god knows how long, if i didn’t hate arma 2 so much (bugs&lag) i would love dayZ. What mind s me is that it took a mod like DayZ to give them the idea that a good realistic zombie game would be succesful… I had such high hopes for games like dead island until i saw a gameplay of electric machete’s and … HOPEFULLY this will FINALLY be the one and only good zombie game.

Oh Dear

Hunter – there is no such thing as a ‘realistic’ zombie apocalypse game, because the entire premise runs counter to the idea of ‘realism’. It’s fantasy. As for ‘one and only good zombie game’, you’re clearly not a gamer if you think there’s never been a good zombie game. You’re just…not a gamer, at all.

Then again, you’re probably the same ‘Hunter’ who wrote that vapid rubbish about how those who disliked the badly-written and falsely-advertised ending to Mass Effect 3 were “ungrateful children” regardless of their reasoning behind it, so clearly your opinions are to be taken with a pinch of salt.

My only complaint with Day Z was that the Zombies ran like professional athletes and that just doesn’t go well with the whole suspenseful survivor tone that Day Z was shooting for.

I Have yet to play Dayz. I just downloaded arma 2 last night though. I would have to agree with hunter in part. I have longed for the “realistic” zombie survival game. granted zombies are not real, I think Oh Dear we know that. but games like Dead Island? That game was a huge let down. I am looking forward to a new game where the people that make it actually are telling the truth about how cool and real the game is. Im just tired of getting yanked around spending money left and right on empty promises from game makers saying their game is the best and then come to find out it blows. they just wanted money. Skyrim and dark souls made me realize that there may be hope and that maybe just maybe i should wait before i throw out my gaming stuff and take up outside activities. Lets all hope that The war Z is one of those games like skyrim or dark souls.

Day Z is awesome, and it’s still in Alpha, so don’t listen to anyone ing about bugs.

Once you slip into that world, you don’t come out till your dead!

ARMAII is the PERFECT engine for it, and the series right back to Flashpoint has had a history of zombie mods…

For some reason it just took this long to catch on with the rest of the world…

I will resist playing this blatant knock off of someone elses work, “War Z” who can hardly even conjour up an original name…

DayZ is great, especially considering it’s an alpha. You definitely need time to be able to wander the world without rushing, which would just get you killed. War Z may end up having a problem with Paramount considering the name of the game, War Z is VERY close to Paramount’s upcoming movie World War Z which is going to be a huge blockbuster, based on the book of the same name by Max Brooks. Only time will tell however.
