Zombie RPG Dead State Revealed

We’ve heard rumors and speculation on a project called ZRPG for a while. It’s in the works at Doublebear, which is made up of veterans of Obsidian Entertainment and Troika. Now, thanks to an interview at RockPaperShotgun, we’ve got plenty more details to pass on.

The new project is called Dead State, and it’s a true RPG set in a zombie apocalypse. You’re running the local safe house, a school. You’ll go outside to hunt for supplies, food and allies. Once you get back to the shelter, you’ll reinforce your defenses and improve your equipment. Think Fallout, except in Texas, and there are ZOMBIES.

Zombie purists will be happy with Dead State, which will feature the classic shambling zombie. You can easily outrun one or two, but get cornered by a horde of them, and you’re likely to end up as the main course on the zombie buffet.

The zombies aren’t actually the core of the game. In fact, Brian Mitsoda of Doublebear says the game, “is not about the zombies, but about how people react to a crisis and what they are willing to do to other human beings and even members of their group to stay alive or protect their own.” Remember those allies we mentioned you need to find? Well, there are other groups of survivors trying to recruit as well.

Since you’re running one shelter, you’ll have the opportunity to makes alliances with some groups. However, each group you befriend will likely have enemies, and they won’t be keen on you helping out. If you get into a shootout on the street, you can expect the noise to attract the undead, making a bad situation even worse. Of course, smart positioning could lead to the zombies falling upon your enemies, making your job much easier.

One of the game’s inspirations is X-Com, and the turn-based combat sounds like it will have a similar feel to the venerable franchise. Misoda mentioned that they want that same “feeling of dread” that the X-Com games evoked. “You only have line of sight to what you and your allies see. It’s very easy to be in a situation where you turn the corner and there are five zombies waiting there or a case where you fail to properly sweep a bedroom and one lunges out of the walk-in closet while you’re about to search the dresser. I think that’s a big part of the zombie genre, that experience where your friend gets bit that one time you weren’t careful,” he says.

We’ll have to wait for more information on Dead State, but from what we’ve heard so far, it sounds like it could be a really interesting take on the done-to-death zombie game. For more information, you can check out the official site, or stay tuned to FileFront.
