I am confused between MODS and MAPS/SKINS/MODELS
When I download a MOD can I only use it on a server that supports it?
Also what about MAPS/SKINS and MODELS. When can I use those?
This is as far as I understand it: A model is the actual 3D model of the objects in the game (vehicles, tree's etc.) Changing a model would change the game, and the server would reconize your game as being slightly different. Not letting ya in.
A skin is a texture (picture) that covers the model. You can use skins in normal battlefield because it doesn't actully change the model, giving a Sherman black paint wouldn't make it any different from a green sherman except for making it look a bit different (ie. doesn't make it more powerful, faster)
Mods are collections of different models, skins, maps, sounds etc. that change the game. Make some things more powerful, slower, faster what ever. This would make your game different then the normal battlefield. Meaning if your running a mod. You won't be able to play on the normal BF.
Maps are pretty obvious, if you don't have a map that the server is running. Then you can't run round in it.
basically, if you want to play your Map/Mod/Model, you have to go on a server with it, for skins, it dosent matter
This certainly clears up many questions except one! Do I have to have the MOD installed to see the servers with running MODS? For example I would like to see what MODS people are playing without having them installed. If I am interested I can download the MOD and then play.
You can also have sound mods installed and play multiplayer.
A recomend a program called All Seeing Eye, like Gamespy without all the ...gamespy shit. http://www.udpsoft.com/eye/
It can reconize mods without having them installed on your copy of BF.
