hello folks, hope I am posting in right place. I did plan to look at posts to see if this topic has come up before but web access is a bit iffy today so I shall grab the moment. I bought Age of Empires, and then the Conquerors expansion pack years ago when I was running Windows ME and had a Savage 4 graphics card. I eventually put the game away because the graphics would suddenly go 'grainy' and the colors seemed to separate out so the ground was green and orange dots. I assumed it was to do with my graphics card. I have just installed these two games and started playing again, now on XP SP2 and with a Radeon 9600 graphics card - and the same thing has happened. It isn't immediate but I have no idea what triggers it. I have two other clones Empire Earth and Rise of Nations, but I prefer the original, Age of Empires, so would appreciate to know if others have met this problem and if there is a solution so I can continue. I never made it beyond Castle Age last time.... thank you :) oops, I see this is really for AoE 3 - sorry.....
No problem. We can have this moved to the problems and errors forum =] I think the problem for your game is that your discs have been scratched up pretty badly. You might want to get them cleaned, just to make sure. =]
thanks for answering. I have just checked the Conquerors disk and it is spotless. The Aof E disk looks a bit tired, but it is the Conquerors I am playing from, so although a worthwhile suggestion, I do not think it is the right one this time :)
Alright then =]. Try updating your version of Direct X http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=0a9b6820-bfbb-4799-9908-d418cdeac197&DisplayLang=en Its a program that provides an interface between your card and computer. Also try updating your drivers on your card, to make sure everything is updated. Come back to us once youve tried both of those =]
hello Tom. Direct X 9, so reckon that ok. Just put the latest radeon catalyst driver on, tho wish I hadn't as XP doesn't just let me take the old one off, swap it to vga and then put the new one on, and so I will have to fiddle until I remember how to do it as now I have the roller blind effect which means, I think that the old was still in place when this one installed despite me uninstalling - XP replaces it as soon as I boot up. Anyway, while putting the latest driver on should be a good thing, I am not confident that it will solve my problem ( which does not appear immediately I enter the game) as I am using a different machine, a different card and a different OS since the problem first became evident several years back - and it only happens with AoE. Thanks for helping, appreciated. Now... back to this driver....
Sorry to hear that your old drivers are still stuck there. Im only familiar with nvidia cards and not Ati, so cant help you much further than this. =[
that's ok, I have sorted it now. The game played perfectly tonight, until I quit, and then there was an odd flash and the game had closed but the color of my wallpaper was wrong! I changed the wallpaper and all was ok again. I can live with it if it only happens now and again. Cheers T0m
Thats good to hear =]. The changing wallpaper seems kind of queer but everything else is working fine, no? If you cant live with it, try using your drivers to set up your desktop (if the program comes with your drivers) and not window's normal desktop display programs.
thank you T0M for your kind interest in helping me. If I only get the problem now and again I can live with it. Meanwhile I am progressing quite well in the game, for one who is hopeless, helpless and useless in these matters, and yes, I am enjoying it :)
Good to hear. Good luck in the future. =]
