I didn't make it!
First of all, I really want Armada III! But it seems very unlikly. I got loads of sig's for the petition, but it's only at 2020. We need bout 100,000 to even make viacom consider it. Anyhoo, is it true that Armada was made/sold on a loss for Activision? Note: In all honesty, I think you modders I far more capabable of making the perfect Trek, than Viacom ever will be. Your abilities are unsupassed!! But, using A2, as a base, is not a good idea, as it's to limited and there will be huge performance issues, plus we won't be able to have improved graphics. So you need a new engine from, guess who Viacom!! (the irony) On this topic does anyone have any idea's, of how to get the AIII, campaign moving bit more? (I in process trying to get it put up on Startrek.com) Thx guy's
no ideas, I just think a new ship/space based RTS game would be enough so long as it's good, true it'd never hit this site but no doubt there would be a Filesnetwork site for it. As long as it's moddable it can be made trek very quickly.
Interface, much of the time, is the problem with a lot of these games. If you don't have a good interface, then you haven't a good game. The interface of Armada II is alright, but one thing that I'd like to see is any RTS game that has the following: 1. Veterancy - shows how many enemies you've fragged. 2. Multi-class label functionality. 3. Ability to mod your own class labels - in separate cdf files (class definition files). 4. Have the same moddability functions Armada 2 does, just expanded. 5. The avoidance thing in Armada games is buggy. All 3d objects are assumed to have a cubical barrier surrounding them that determines avoidance. Some kind of new approach must be at-hand so that the games understand what a surface is so that things like avoidance could be either done away with, or allow for collision, and also so that phaser and torpedo fire doesn't go through ships to hit their primary target. That way any weapon could potentially do damage to a ship - even an allied ship. You'd have to plan your maneuvers so that there was no friendly fire. 6. Escape Pods. 7. Better physics, even add thermal effects from stars and nebulae in as another variable. 8. Construction ships cannot take everything they need with them - as they are way too small. That can be editted in games now, but what I was thinking is have construction support ships that bring the materials to the construction ship. It would add a new element to the game, no doubt. 9. Other stuff I haven't thought of.
Why not just make a new engine?
The problem with making a new engine is:
- its difficult and you need very expensive software to do it.
- if the engine was to suport everything Elrond1982 mentioned/listed it would take longer to properly program and develop than it would for Viacom to make A3, since they have the origanal source code and all they have to do is improve it, where as the modders here (very good modders at that :) ) would have to start from scratch.
- everyone involved in the making of the engine would need the same software/system reqs on the machines to create the engine. (and everyone would have to keep each other up-to-date with their progress)
- and finally, we dont own the licence to trek, probably never will.
Ahhh... Well scratch that idea...
Per "Harry Lang" at STGU and STG sites..there will be an announcement for a "Formerly Cancelled" RTS ST game to be released prior to the MMOG....no other details are available at this time..
Harry Lang is the Viacom /Paramount VP of development of all games, including Star Trek, for Paramount Pictures...
Yes O'nieal, there is hope
when was that posted though?
talking about makeing a armada 3 why not find another game engine to use, on thats not so limited, my suggestions are "conquest frontier wars", er i think it ubisoft who owns that and "haegemonia" thats digital reality or wanadoo, perhaps we could get them to release there source code for modding? plus i like the way they play in a multisystem map where you need to use wormholes to get to new systems , but they can be protected etc.....
Well, making a new Armada wouldn't really be too expensive. I do know people in programming and other related things that could get something started, but they are too busy. I'm fairly satisfied with what A2 can do. It can do still do so much more than what has already been done, but not everyone besides a few modding veterans are really willing to keep pushing A2 until we get every last drop out of it.
