Has any notice how well balanced armada was? Almost all phaser only do 24 damage, and torpedoes do 30. That it. Most armada 2 damage goes up to 120. It also way more cannon. Photon torpedo were so much stronger then phaser, their heavy weapons (meaning more powerful, yet why are they almost all of them do only 30 damage, when phaser go up to 120. Armada had all phasers 24 damage and all torps do 30(notice how photons were stronger?) Thinking of borrowing this system, see how it work in armada 2.
Yeah I always liked A1 a little more than 2 and thats one of the reasons, give it a try Dontai, give me a reason to like A2 alittle more:)
I guess there is no doubt that A1 is better balanced than A2 cuz A2 is balanced like crap X_X

my current mod "Art of War" is based heavily on Armada 1, just have a ship, 5 special weapons and a few dozen wireframes to finish for the 2 race beta.
I always prefered the shield/weapons ratios from A1, a ship could take a pounding, float off into a nebula and repair itselft to rejoin the fray...
Well here in week or so i will release quick mod that replace the stock balance with that of a1. Then the people on site could say how they like the balance. It be quick mod unlike my other ones. Somethings will have to be change, a1 relied heavily on phaser only. A2 has torpedoes which mean shields hafe to be increased. So far result are promising. Instead relying on fire power, stronger ship survive longer because more sheild. Their really is no uber ships. Borg will bad @ss as usual. Just not over powered
I think your all missing a key point, yea armada 1 was perfectly balenced, but only cause the 4 races were exactly the same! Aside from the models and the special weapons there was little to distingish each race. At least with A2 there was variation between the races, and that playing with one race was noticably different to playing with another.
Actually, that not true at all. In fact you couldn't be further from the truth. Romulans and the federation were only one who had access to artillery. Romulan were designed for stealth and sabotage (hence the sensor jammer). The klingons were designed for heavy combat and boarding operation. Borg were designed for boarding operation. Federation were designed for fleet support, and light combat support. Hence so many repair ability's. Even the mines were really designed for fleet support. See how their completely different? Every race had it own unique fleet abilities. Federation could quickly repair and rescue damage ships. Romulans couldn't ect.
personally I loved how A1 was balanced sure there were some minor incosistancies between races, but it was enough to condemn you from the start of the match.
Well compared to A2, where there is a great deal more variety between the races due to the much larger number of races, ships and stations.
In A1 you have the shrike, defiant, b'rel and interceptor, which while granted had different abilities they all do exactly the same thing in game. Then you have the 4 cruisers, which again were all approximately equal to each other, then you have the slight difference with the torpedo cruiser, two of the races had artillery the other two had ordinary heavily armed ships. Then the four battleships which are all fundimentally the same, sure the special weapons were different and the borg cube was stronger but again no dramatic difference there.
To be totally honest, A1 was boring due to this lack of diversity, of cause yea, the romulans had a kinda stealth weapon them, the borg were good at assimulating and had a bit stronger vessels, but I mean 4 combat ships per race! (scouts can't really count), you might as well have played rock paper sissors. There was a very limited number of stratagies that you could employ as each race, and even fewer that only one race could realistically do.
