If TA Spring is a testament to anything, is that you can take a dead great game and make it better but putting it in the hands of the fans directly (even if supreme commander did shit on its slipstream, though i secretly believe ct had his hands in spring)

I dream that a team of star trek fans with developing backgrounds can make a good 3d space engine with all of the features we're used too.

There that's my main hoot..

I looked into this quite seriously a while back, actually.

I had gone to the trouble of downloading some of these projects and having a look at them, and I did find a couple that we could probably have hijacked for out own engine.

However, after thinking it through for quite a while I decided its fairly pointless. My opinion was that getting so much as a third of the active modders to move to a different engine would be near impossible as (in my opinion) a significant number of people would be likely to oppose it on the basis that the new engine wasn't armada, which is quite correct.

In the end I decided that going ahead and trying to encourage people to use another engine would be creating another RTS community from scratch at the expense of the Armada community, which wouldn't be good.

The best thing to do would be to go forward with the engine we have available and create mods people want to play. Where there are people playing the mods there will be people that manage to get a copy of Armada. We could always help people discovering Armada through releasing mods that just happen to work with the demo as well, even if its only to a limited extent. I mean, heck. Look at the top ten weekly downloads! It ALWAYS has the demo in it. People are still looking at the game and wondering if they want to spend some cash on it many years after the game has been released.

What of it? Its going to use an as of yet unfinished game engine instead of the Armada engine.

We have plenty of game engines though that are actually complete, you can freely download the FreeSpace engine since its been open sourced and there is a Star Trek mod for that which looks quite good.

There's another going for the open source OGRE engine, or there is the Excalibur engine being developed mostly by the Bridge Commander community.

All of these projects share one thing in common. They aren't armada, and this is the Armada community. Getting everybody to move to a different engine, even if it offered everything armada did and more would be a near impossible task, and your always going to have downsides as well as plus points.

We certainly don't have a great exodus at the moment, and I can't see one coming.

I wouldn't call it an unfinished engine when there are already games using the same engine have been out on the PC and PS2. New games for PC, Nintendo Wii, and XBox360 are already near release. I wouldn't call it an unfinished engine.:p

Why is it a weird thread, and why does it deserve to be locked?

The Freespace Engine, and the OGRE Engine (if based for Freespace and Bridge Commander) wouldn't be suitable for an RTS game. The Engine that is being done over at MSFC is. :)
