This may stir up more trouble than it is worth, but here goes. While playing Armada2 online lately, I've noticed a great deal of less than acceptable behavior in pursuit of a win. I did not recognize anyone from A2 Files or any of the linked sites. At least no one using the same screen name they use here. It got so bad in one match, I thought for a minute I was playing on the 1v1 ladder in CnC3.

Because of this, I have decided to post something my old SFC3 Clan from years ago had on their web site. This was a truly great bunch of people to game with and I really hope everyone either has now or has had the opportunity to be in a clan like that. We called it the "Online Code of Honor". It had no enforcement except for your own conscience, which is the only judge you cannot hide from. It may be a complete waste of time in this day and age, but we all tried hard to play by it and it worked, most of the time.

1) Never use the word "n00b" when addressing another gamer. 2) Remember, this is a GAME! Not a lifestyle choice! 3) If the only way you can express yourself online is foul language, then please be quiet! 4) Play TO win, not just for only the wins 5) Online slang is only cool when everyone gets it, otherwise it is just gibberish. 6) If someone hosts a game, host them back. 7) Help someone learn to play the game better today, have a loyal online friend forever. 8) Cheaters are losers at life in addition to this game. 9) There is no honor in defeating the ignorant. 10) Some people will not like you or think you are the coolest thing ever, no matter what you do. Do not take it personally.

That's it. If anyone can think of something to add feel free. I am pleased and proud to say I make a serious effort to still live by these rules in all my online interactions with y'all, not just the games.

I think they're very good actually, especially point one which I despise, but when you have GameSpy in CnC3 having a lobby called "noobs only 1" (admittedly, I played there, only at first) I think it doesn't really help the situation.

everyone starts off as a "noob".. unfortunately for some experienced players, those "noobs" will someday be wiping the floor with them.

I agree. 'n00b' used to be shorthand for 'newbie'. The meaning has morphed into something quite different now, which implies this person is automatically unworthy of any respect. Those of us in the WishBones(SFC3 Clan name. Long story. Tell ya about it later.) always felt that everyone was entitled to respect about something, somewhere. "He might brand new at playing Armada II, but his day job is as a Nobel-prize winning nuclear physicist."

Hello: I agree with you Thunderfoot006, I myself had that kind of direspect a long time ago when I was a more online player (now I spend most time modding or playing instant action), but it was awesome how other players helped me and the bad guy finally went offline becasue nobody wanted to play with that one anymore. I am not an expert player and you all may beat me with my own mods, but the chance to see new players to come, to play with you and you to help them and forge a new friendship, that is priceless. I simply cannot understand how other people can treat new players with disrespect, they forgot they were newbies too. Good rules Thunderfoot, very accurate :)

I agree.. the world noob is synonymous with idiot in gaming/leet vocabulary. It's funny.. When I used to play Bridge Commander online I used to change my name alot. I remember coming into a game that was being hosted by a clan - all the players bar me had their clan initials infront of them. So there I was 1 "noob" against 4 clan players, as they put it..and they ganged up on me... Long story short I wiped the floor with them in a Vor'cha. It seems that if you join a game and you are on your own you are a noob.. You could be the most experienced player on the map but because you are out numbered you automatically are a noob. Moral of the story - just because you've never seen the name before doesn't mean it's someone who is new. So I agree noob is sometimes used out of context.

If someone is calling others noobs in a game the only thing to do is to test whether they can back up all their bull talk, make a break from them and see if they have the spine to back up their disrespect.

Actually, N00b used to mean someone that thought they knew everything but actually knew nothing. Because of the number of ignorant people that thought they knew what it meant "noob" started being used for what people are using it for now. They can't even spell it properly. :|

Every time someone calls this I always think of the original spelling and meaning. If you consider, if someone thinks they know what it means and they call someone else a noob, what does it prove?

That person thinks they know everything, but they don't. So... by my reasoning and the original definition of the word that makes them the N00b.

I used to play A2 literally every day. I have now given up with it. When I started playing we had fun. Cheating was socially unacceptable, and I remember the days when people on the cheats team halted a game because they had noticed them cheating.

These days cheating is the norm. People don't play to enjoy, just to win. They don't care about having a good game. I remember games lasting hours because the skill levels we so closely matched. Now, its a rush and a fifteen minute game.

Personally I don't think its worth it because its simply not fun now. I play DEFCON these days instead.

Well, this thread has got people thinking a little, if the view count and the posts so far are anything to go by. Good! I like it when people think rather than react. If this thread keeps just one person from calling someone else that stupid name just once, it has served its purpose. Don't keep it to yourselves, people. Pass it on. I'd like very much to make 'N00b' just as unfit to use anywhere as the word which Dog the Bounty Hunter was pulled off TV for saying.

That should be normal, but it isnt like that in any game...

Anyway, there isnt that much cheating.

But i agree, A2 online isnt that fun anymore as it was few years ago... too many arrogant fools are around and keep namechanging & stealing to ruin games.

If anyone wants to play online or needs a short guide, just contact me and i'll help you out :) .

Seriously, we need to get a game together. Hmmmm...not sure when, as we'd all need to get together and not be subject to GameSpy's, and I use the following word liberally when talking about GameSpy, shitty connections.

At the very least, I know a GREAT place where we can find hundreds of maps to play on :p
