First, this is solely my opinion.. if you agree, cool, if you don't, it's no sweat off my back... And to put it frankly I'm sick and tired of seeing blatantly ignorant or overly critical comments regarding PoTDs. This isn't necessarily a huge problem, but it has the potential to cause... disagreement. By blatantly ignorant or overly critical I mean: -marking down a pic because it doesn't have something that the engine's incapable of doing anyways -people marking down pics because they think it should've been done differently -knocking marks off for pic size or visible guis(nitpicking) People should be thankful we've got as good a selection as we do, not to mention that we have enough submissions that we can have a new PoTD everyday... some sites don't. Go take a look at some of the earliest pics in the archive... they're crap compared to what we're seeing now. Sure, there's always going to be certain aesthetic qualities you're going to mark it on... -background(ie; I prefer plain black w/stars, some people prefer bright backgrounds) -models used/textures -positioning -lighting And that's perfectly alright... but saying something along the lines of "should have more action" or "should have 'whatever'" is nonsense. Give it a rating based on what it is not what you think the pic should be... Part of it's manners(if you can't say something nice) and part of it's respect and fostering growth in the community. Ripping on the first PoTD a new member gets put up doesn't do anything for the community, it just makes you seem like an asshole and might frustrate people coming in. I think theStarfleetKid put it pretty well... "think you can do better? throw down and submit your own" But I have to add "if not... then shut up."

Speaking from the staff perspective...I entirely agree with you. The ONLY thing I disagree with is people marking down for having a GUI (it is, with respect ctrl+i 2 or 3 times) however that's only if there are things to be seen that are thus covered up... Anyhow, yup, you're 100% right. Shame though, because the people reading this aren't the people who need to be.

Actually, I said exactly that, then I edited it out before I posted it 'cause I wanted to leave a little to the imagination. ;) But I'm right behind you on this one, elevatormusic. The PotD is no longer enjoyable for me because I find myself all too frequently getting fed up with the comments left there. So what's started happening? I don't even look! I just vote 10/10 and close the window. Without reading the comments. If anything's going to kill the quality of PotDs, it's discouraging people who submit them by giving them nothing but grief. Yeah, I've been overly critical of other people's PotDs in the past, but I've submitted plenty of them in my time! Some people I've NEVER seen submit anything BUT snarky comments about other people's PotDs! It's beyond "getting out of hand". It's out of hand. And I challenge those who have nothing better to do than vote 4/10 every day to go play the game and take their own. Or if not, maybe just go play the game online and see themselves in PotDs after they get owned time and again....

You've got a point Joel, if it obscures then it's fair game... but not everyone knows about ctrl+i... I didn't for the first couple I submitted. And as a side note, today's PoTD is a fairly good example of what I'm talking about.

I'm gonna leave a link to this thread in the next PoTD for all to read, I think it's important the community has its word with others in it.

first off i only grade on asthetics, but i don't believe in giving a picture of the day a 10/10 just because somone submitted it. Pictures of the day are open to interpretation. Every artist has had his fans and critics, its the nature of the "art" submissions system. people are going to have their opinions and telling them how to form their interpretations is a little bigheaded. people should know that before submitting that they will be put in front of the community, they should know that critism is possible. some viewers hold their pics to a higher standard than others. I see the potd as a tool and a show case. its good for presenting your work and at the same time get community reaction. this will only increase the quality of the pics but also the mods. The "harsh" critisism ive got for Dogs of War has helped me create new features and increase the quality of the mod. to those saying that there are too many negative comments, why don't you spend less time in the comment box, chastising negative comments and rate the pic. not every pic is going to please everybody everytime. all pics are open to individual interpretation, thats why we have potds.

well thats their perogative. but again every pic wont get an 9,8,7 and so on. if you like the pic tell sombody and if not tell why. if the trend is constantly negative, maybe the pics are less apealing to the majority of the voters, again thats the nature of the system. when i submit i potd i only submit my best. the first variant of dogs of war is a far cry from the quality i have achieved now. the main reason is potd's. i look at the bad ones and learn from them, and the same goes for the good. Negativity can often be a good thing. though i think that you are aiming at those who "abuse" the system. i think they are holding the pics to higher standard, which though is negative can help new modders learn and improve. its a sign that the community is expecting more, and wanting quality. now they might do it in a rude manner, but thats them

Well whilst I do agree with many points made, the old saying comes out again - "You can please some of the people some of the time, but you can't please all of the people all of the time".

The sad fact is that its in peoples nature to be complainers and moaners. Simple but true.

Yeah :(

My personal gripe is with the poll results on the POTD poll, a third of people voted Donuts instead of something serious.

I now see what politicians are moaning about with regards to voter apathy!
