I've thought for some time now what kind of reviews you guys want to be reading. This included bullet points of what's in there, long in-depth reviews about the history of the file or general opinions with summing up. The one I use now (if you can tell who writes what apart) is to give my opinions on it, but include content and refer to that and possible relations.

The point is, do you guys enjoy reading what we put up? I know the 4 of us on the site have different styles and you may like/dislike each in turn, but what do you think about them? Do you think they're too long, too short? Perhaps not detailed enough about certain aspects. Are there things you want to see more of?

I'm not saying anything will change and I can't guarantee the others would want to take it on board, but I just want to know what you guys feel about it. Of course, this fundamentally comes down to whether or not you think we're doing a good job on the site, which by the way feel free to comment on.

I just want you guys to review us, really. Please, if there is any crticism, keep it constructive rather than "you n00bs" and if you want to sing our praise...well I don't think we'll stop you. :p

What do you think then?

Personally, all I require is a brief synopsis. Something concise, to summarize the content. What you usually provide, however, is an evaluation in much greater detail- often with references that put me in the right frame of mind. To sum up, what you do fits real nicely with what I'd expect in a top-shelf service. But, what I expect is a great deal less.

Do you think it would be nice then to have some sort of summary with the item? Eg.

Battleship - Balanced game-play - Looks good - Content all there

That way you'd get the key points and the review on top if you fancy reading that, which would obviously include those points.

I'm also curious as to whether or not people fully read the reviews. They may skim read it thinking "grr, two paragraph's...too much!" and miss details. Obviously no upset caused if you don't fully read the reviews, but if it's a longer one, do you tend to read it all?

Well, speaking for myself, I think that the reviews are just about perfect, no changes should be made. The best part in my opinion, is how each review doesn't seem to follow the template of another. For example, nowadays maps get a nice tactical analysis showing how good it is for all out war, while a ship will get a list of statistics, it's quality and its balance. One thing that could be included is the poly-count of a model, but that might be hard to find if the modder never included it. These things make the review seem more, well human. Not as if someone just looked at the description in a readme and just copied and pasted. An idea would maybe be to include the bullet points for a quick summary, the reviewers vote counts a great deal in my eyes, and then include what is currently being done a nice long essay about the file. These make good reading and are often the deciding factor. In all, I think I can say that since being here (A2files) for coming on three years, the current staff (including Tycoon, as he was as good as those we've got at the moment) are possibly the best that the site, nay the whole network has ever had. Compared to other sites; they are fair, friendly, still play a role in the community and somehow have managed to maintain interest in that old game we know and love.

On the whole I think the reviews are good and very in-depth. I've rarely had a problem (which is quite something since I've been here just over three years!) I prefer the good descriptions and get frustrated by a few lines. How about the summary idea for those who like to read a line or two and then below a 'beefy' version for those of us who love detail? The one (and only!) problem I've found is that it depends on the mood of the reviewer. However not everyone will agree and I can't see a way around that unless you want 'robotic' reviews. A compromise would be, at the start, something like "and the opinion of (name of reviewer) is" Balance is vital!

Yes. A quick 2 - 3 word (or sentence) summary, maybe keeping a consistent format, followed by the usual review; I'd vote for that. However, the current use of reviewer's ratings kind of serves that purpose. Frankly either way works for me, as I don't think any changes are really needed. And I totally agree with both amateur and archerscott. They've said it well enough for me. Oh, and about reading the reviews. I always read them, even if I'm in a hurry. But I'm sad to say I just don't have the time, anymore, to download and play with the mods. Maybe someday, when I get a few less projects going on.

We could do this, but personally I feel its fairly degrading to the author to give something a low numbered score, especially when the file deserves a low mark and most of the time files end up getting high marks which then somewhat degrades the worth of a higher scores for exceptional files.

Not to mention we then end up arguing about it in the comments.

I suppose we could write a set of guidelines as to what each score is worth. Do other people think a numbered score is important?

I do agree with archerscott's point that the name of the reviewer should be posted on the review. I have suggested pushed this up to the senior staff to see if they will add this somewhere on the page network wide as the information is logged in the admin system at the moment so it should be just a case of putting another variable on the page if they want to do this.

We can just add our name at the bottom of the review manually, which we will do for the time being.

The numbered score (Reviewer's rating) is helpful to me to get a quick feel for what I can expect. Although, as you say, it can seem a little degrading to the author. But, I wouldn't worry about it, as we all need thicker skins, lol.

being a critic for a newspaper myself i find the reviews very helpful. they often can describe aspects of a mod that the readme leaves out. its really helpful when looking for quality aspects of a mod. personally i wish i could write reviews for a2 files :p
