Hi, Ive already seen most of the lag topics..and know the general fixes..however this is new. Been playing BF since it came out..never had any troubles. Now..within the last week or so..playing fine...38-50 ping or so..then BOOM..5 second total lag. "Warning connection problems..etc" comes up. Then its gone and everything is fine again. Of course by then your dead or crashed. So has anyone else experienced this? I did catch one port access attempt via my firwall..but can such a port scan or hack attempt cause a 5 second lag? To the point of totally freezing your game until the spike is over? Anyone else have this? Is the internet finally overloaded? :)

Try turning off all useless processes that are running in the background via Task Manager.

I dunno then, maybe try joining servers that are in the same area as you?

I usually sort the list of servers by ping and join one that is low.

Not a question of how many FPS you get playing a game, lag is caused by internet problems, I suggest it may be related to a new virus just starting to spread that is causing big bandwidth probs for some ISP's and that may cause the occaisional (or even regular if your ISP is paticularly badly hit) "connection problem detected" message.

I am in Australia and have played online over the last few days and have had few problems, but it is supposed to be a big problem in Europe at the moment. Give it a few days or a week for the virus to start dying down and see if it improves. You all, I trust, have up to date AV and good firewalls? if not get one and scan your computer right away. I have seen computers that can't, according to the owner, connect to the internet (comes up "server not available", yet are actually running flat out transferring data when you do a traffic check on them.

but can such a port scan or hack attempt cause a 5 second lag?

Umm, yes, if it is a major attack on your ISP! It could, theoretically, shut your internet off for quite a while, even shut your entire ISP down for a while if it is a big attack, it has happened to a few ISP's.

seems to happen even with a low ping , i try never to join a game with a ping higher than 100 ,plus i got a fast connection rated over 60 times faster than dialup ,getting it narrowed bown to just certain maps doing it ,going to check em later and post wich ones it happens on

Seabatt, I'm getting the same problems as well. Though it's not my computer, it's actually my ISP's fault. I thought it was my router, but then I hooked my modem directly up to my computer and I still got the 5 second connection problems every 15 minutes or so.

I would assume it's probably a big problem right now. I have SBC Yahoo DSL right now and I keep getting those darned connection problems. Though, I did see about 7 SBC trucks out today, so maybe they'll be fixing it.
