Hello All, I'm just curious about how much people really like Ranked servers. I want to like them, I really do. But I have had some issues with Ranked servers and had been avoiding them pretty much altogether. I play only on 64 people servers and when I played v 1.0 of BF2 it seemed that Ranked servers were laggy to me. Perhaps I just didn't come accross a really good server. But anyway, that had me avoiding them. I would play on the Non-Ranked [RRx] Squad(Red Rain Squad) server whenever it was up because it was very smooth for me on there and they had server settings that I really liked. One of which is 3 rounds per map. That way there is no Verifying Client Data and computer slowdown lag for the first minute of play while textures are still loading, every single round. I could play on there all day or until their server went down with no issues. I had many very enjoyable games on their server! Thank you Red Rain Squad and I hope you update to 1.02 soon! Now when I had the flawed 1.01 patch installed for a couple of days, there were(esentially) no Non-Ranked 64 player servers to play on. There may have been a couple but my ping to them was no good. So I played on Gamespot GameCenter (www.gamecenter.com) Ranked servers. They seemed to work pretty well. 64 players with minimal lag(seemed like I could detect just a hint more net lag compared to playing on 1.0 Non-Ranked servers) and I could play on them for a considerable amount of time. I was happily surprised. But I had problems with the 1.01 patch on my system and I uninstalled it when it was recalled, and so I went back to playing on [RRx] Squad with BF2 1.0. Now that patch 1.02 is here it's back to the same issue, for me. No 64 player Non-Ranked severs to choose from, so far. It's still very early in the life of 1.02 and it wouldn't surprise me if there are some good Non-Ranked servers to play on soon. Still, this got me curious as to what other folks think about Ranked servers and wondering if they have any issues with playing on them. When I played 1.02 for the first few hours my experience with playing on Ranked servers was not good. I tried playing on a few different Ranked servers but I would always get kicked by PunkBuster within 5 to 15 minutes, for one of three different PB kick/errors. Bah! I never had that problem on Non-Ranked servers and so now I miss the choice of havng a good Non-Ranked server to play on. How are 64 player Ranked servers working out for you guys? Do you get smooth gameplay? Do you get kick by PB very often? Can you play on them for hours at a time with no issues? Why does it seem that everbody in the world wants to run a 'Ranked' server? (ok, perhaps that's exaggerating, maybe) Perhaps I've just had bad luck so far when trying 64 player Ranked servers. I have not seen a Gamespot GameCenter Ranked server in 1.02 yet but I am hoping to see them soon, as well as my favorite Non-Ranked server, [RRx] Squad. Cheers, OneTinSoldier

The only problem i have with the rank servers is the 64 verison maps. If i happpen to find an east coast rank 64 player server then i get no lag. Other than that i can't even play them. All 32/16 player rank servers run awesome and i can even play UK ramk servers with no problems.

Thats all I play because the people dont TK as often and they work together more than in a non-ranked room. I get very little lag in the too.

They're fun to play on, I guess. Mostly I just pick one of the servers with a decent amount of players on and I usually don't notice whether or not it's ranked. Being kicked by PB isn't much of a problem for me either. My only problem really is lag. It's not necessarily because of BF2, but it's probably due to my connection since I reinstalled Windows since every other game is acting up.

Thanks for the great replies guys. Continue posting your thoughts about ranked servers! :) Well I guess I was just having bad luck with finding good servers earlier because I have played on a few good Ranked servers since I made this thread. Figures... hehe. There's at least one Gamespot GameCenter Ranked server running 1.02 now and I just disconnected from it. Hosts 64 people and uses 64 player sized maps. 3 rounds per map. I Played on it for a long time with no lag or PB issues whatsoever! :Pc: Cheers, OneTinSoldier

I noticed before any of the patches that the Gamespot ranked servers ran really good for me too. Most of the other ranked servers I would experience all the problems you outlined in your initial post.

This reinforces my theory that the main problem with the ranked servers is that many of the greedy people running them are trying to squeeze to many servers on a single box. Unranked servers are often run by the community, and thus they are using their own hardware/bandwidth and more often than not they aren't over-taxing their rigs since it affects the gameplay.

as i have said before. Ranked servers are squished onto boxes because of the cut Ea asks for. so yes ...most companies doing the ranked servers are forced to get 10 + servers on a single box to make ends meat.

:agreed I wonder where Gamespot GameCenter is coming up with the goods to run such great servers? Anyway, they're my new home for now. But there is only a couple of them running the new patch, an East server and a West server. I joined one that was empty. Ten people have to join before the game will start. Everyone can fly or drive around in vehicles, fire weapons and kill people before the game is started. But you can't capture flags and the kills don't mean anything until the game has actually started(when ten people have joined). I had to wait quite a while for ten folks to join up. But it was kind of cool just messing around with the six or so people that were on there until the remaining four that were needed showed up. :) Cheers, OneTinSoldier

I've had a low-end system, and Ranked 64 player servers seemed to lag, while non-ranked 64 player servers didn't seem to lag that much (i was within my usual 15FPS, which was good for my computer). Now, i got a brand new rig, and it's very rare to find a ranked 64 player server that lags. So, the majority of the "lag" on ranked servers, even though it may seem as net-lag, is actually client lag due to your system. There are still however a few crappy 64 player servers that just can't handle their own load, and they do lag. But there are far more those that don't lag
