Ever since I've started playing BF2 I have been trying to figure out whether or not stats are a good thing. After an experience the other day I have concluded, that they are, in fact, NOT. The other day I ran into a soldier from the other team. At first I was wondering why he had his knife out and continued to lunge at me with it as I tried to waste him with my rifle. Then I realized the truth...he was trying to get his friggin' knife badge.

In unranked servers I have noticed a severe decrease in smack-talk and a considerable increase in teamwork, and less base-raping, because people realize that raping on an unranked server isn't worth getting yelled at by admins.

On ranked servers you see a bunch of stat padders and jackasses running around in C4-covered vehicles saying "LOL TRYIN 2 GET C4 BADGE!" *BOOM*

So does the stats feature in BF2 actually HURT gameplay? I think it does. Because everyone is so concerned with getting their shinies, they don't concentrate on what this game is supposed to be about; TEAMWORK.

I would like to conclude with this statement....it is generally correct to say that AT LEAST the top 50 are all stat-padders/losers anyway, right?

You make some valid points here, but it does force you to use weapons or characters you would not normally use. I have seen the c4 laden vehicle a few times also. I am not a verteran of the game, don't have time to play everyday as some do, so I don't see the goof balls as often as you. Just from my own point of view, I have to use weapons I wouldn't use otherwise.

I think that the rank system is a bad thing because some people just want points or Badges, Ribbons, Medals and don't play teamwork so they cheat, like Stat-padding and campers/Rapers who camp for points. I love when There is teamwork on a server.

I think ranks and stats are most stupid thing ever too, BUT they do seperate those who just want to camp and rape 24/7 from those who actually play games for fun. There aren't many unranked servers though.

I also think that stats make people nastier...I remember back when I played the HL2 mod Plan of Attack. The minute I found out there was a stats tracker for it, I became nasty as hell every time someone killed me. I clawed my way up to #29 on the charts; that was as close as I got to being the best. Finally, I realised that the fun I had playing that game wasn't worth the incredible stress that resulted from trying to be "l337", and I uninstalled that mod.

I did the same thing in bf1942. I enjoyed it more before I knew I was being ranked.

Personally, I think ranks and globalised stats are a bad thing. As the OP said, C4 covered vehicles, medicwhores and point farmers just ruin the gameplay experience. However I must disagree with him about knives. He probably got his stabby out because it is a one-hit-kill weapon, not exclusively to get a knife badge.
