Hey all, One of the things that is really lacking in a lot of the servers I go to are good team tactics. There are a lot of tools at a squad leaders disposal that I dont think most people know about. Here are some tips on how to be a good squad leader. A mark of a good squad is one where the squad leader makes ample use of the VOIP system. It can make or break a squad. Here are some tips for being a good squad leader. 1.) Use the VOIP. It makes all the difference in the world. Typing instructions versus simply talking is a BIG difference. When using the VOIP as a serious leader, keep the idle chatter to a minimum. Stick to giving orders and calling fast instructions. Also, dont be a dick to your squadmates. Thats a big one. 2.) Even if you do have VOIP, ALWAYS... ALWAYS... ALWAYS give orders through the command menu as well. This gives the dudes under your command a basic goal to work for and goes a little ways to helping keep you and your dudes organized. 3.) If you have a good commander... LISTEN to him. Otherwise ignore the loser. Sadly, about 1/20 servers I go to has a good commander in the bunch, so usually, you will be on your own. A lot of commanders will simply click on all the squads in thier list an issu an order to them. Thus, if everyone listens, you are all mobbing about the map like a bunch of losers. Not cool. 4.) As a squad leader you are a mobile spawn point. USE THIS. Dont freaking fly around in a 2 man or single man plane or copter. Thats just retarded and pisses squad mates off. Its also a total waste of your most powerful ability. Also, you have to remember that you are a mobile spawn point. Dont go sneaking through tall grass when you know that members of your squad arent with you and could possibly spawn right on top of you. That will REALLY give away your position. Lastly, if there are guys in your squad that arent spawning on you... they are useless. Boot them if you want to be efective. 5.) Use the Q menu. Use this menu to spot targets. It really helps your entire team out if you call targets. If you spot an enemy tank it lets your whole team know that there is an armored beast bearing down on your position. Even if it kills you, you can bet some people will be spawning with anti tank weapons. Also, calling enemy fighters out REALLY helps your airmen who are dogfighting. THE most important rule of a dogfight is to know where your opponent is, and since bf does not have a good mouselook system for pilots, this is really hard. So help those dudes out a little. 6.) Make command requests through the T menu. Generally you will only be doing this for UAVs and Supplies. Dont forget about this useful little menu. It can help a lot to have a uav overhead when securing a point. 7.) As soon as somebody spawns on you, move away from them. A lot of squad leaders and squad members just stay put when they spawn on a squad leader. Why is this bad? A single grenade can take ALL of you out. Not cool at all. Just be sure to keep spread out. 8.) BE CAREFUL. As a squad leader you are a mobile spawn point. While you are dead YOU CANNOT USE THIS ABILITY. So stay alive. Let other members of your squad move in before you. If its a trap, they die and can respawn on you. Sounds cowardly, but it can make all the difference in an assualt. Especially on larger maps. Here is a good squad make up. You really should have: ---1. Medic. Sometimes two of these dudes duznt hurt but ONLY if you have a 6 man squad. ---2. Support. 1 is ALL you will need. If you find yourself in a squad with two of them either A. Ask one to switch or B. Boot one. Even the unlocked support weapon [i have the bugger] is very hard to use unless you know what you are doing and the chinese and us support guns completely BLOW. ---3. Spec Ops. You want at least one of these buggers but they are completely interchangeable with assualt. If you opperate in city environments these guys can even raplace anti tank. ---4. If you are on a large map where tanks and vehicles are common, you MUST have an anti tank in your squad. At the very least he can cause helicopters to flee and can do serious damage to tanks ---5. Assualt. I dont normally like having these guys in my squad since they really cant do anything special. ---6 Engineer. Unless you have a blackhawk squad dont bother. ---7. Sniper. Generally these guys are a waste of a spot. Most snipers will NOT support your troops and just kinda sit around waiting to shoot people. Really nothing special there. If you can find a good sniper that will actually advance with you, albiet slightly behind, and can dynamically cover your squad from range while moving with your squad, BRING HIM. They are VERY valuable. When sniper shots ring out, people duck for cover and that gives you time to escape. However, good snipers like this are rare. A good strategy is for the squad leader to be this type of sniper so that his men can spawn on him. Hopefully this helps.

Most of your tips are good.Especially the one about squad leaders being spawn points. If a squad is attempting to assault an important waypoint the leader should try and stay out of harms way so his squad can spawn and capture.Especially when your nearest friendly base is far away.

I have to disagree about engineers not being usefull though.A good engineer can keep a lot of armor up and running in the middle of a firefight.I mostly play as engineer or support, whatever I think my squad needs. Also, correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the special forces class disabled if you join a squad?

Don't think so. Anyway, good instructions, but most of the people who would listen are mature and intelligent enough to know this already. It's the tarded leaders who just do their own thing that need to see that - and they wouldn't listen anyway.

---6 Engineer. Unless you have a blackhawk squad dont bother.

Hmm, very shortsighted, and spoken as someone who has probably never played engineer. Been on a squad where the entire mob got caught up on a damaged bridge and only 1 engineer, me! Engineer can lay mines to defend bases, block bridges and etc, I have succesfully destroyed 4 attacking tanks in a row with no other help, name me another squad member who can claim the same, without me the point would have fallen. Engineers, like every other squad member, is useful in the role they are meant for. Granted an Engineer is not much good in an attacking infantry squad, which is exactly what your squad is designed for, but you have never obviously looked at tactics that don't involve the entire squad rushing to attack the nearest enemy flag or strongpoint.

Have you ever given the order "defend this position"? If you had you would then be more than happy to have a couple of engineers around to repair fixed AT and AA weaponry, lay mines, fix damaged vehicles and etc.

Interesting points...thanks m8. I like to snipe and must admit at times I do take up defensive positions and 'wait' for the enemy, but also do advance with a squad from time to time - you are right, this can be very effective provided the squad look out for you, as you are VERY vulnerable on the ground to basically anyone else with a gun...lol When you get a good server where everyone is team minded and play in squads BF2 is absolutely awesome. When u get a server where no one is team minded, although still good fun, it loses something.

Well said, I love being Engineer, I only wished I unlocked the Jackhammer instead of the G3 Assualt rifle now. Those are very useful tips. and I do get the odd game where I have a perfect team, this generally works at night because all the immature ones are fast asleep :p oh and apocalypse_kid you got msn? just looking to meet another fellow Aussie :D

No, usually TS with mates on our TS server.

What name do you play under? I play on internode servers a lot and may be able to find you. I play as dD|apocalypse_kid, so if you see me around in a squad join and we can chat and play. Haha, first thing I did was unlock the jackhammer!

THat is a good point... the only people who will read this already know it since they are taking the time to read it.... Anyways, to defend what I said about engineers... They arent completely useless, but I just feel it would be best to have something else in your squad. When defending a point special forces dudes can lay c4 to take out enemy tanks. While this takes a little more than laying at mines does, it also means you wont have random at mines blowing up your own boys. Also, it is good that your engineers can repair stuff.... but so can supply crates. Even a retarded commander can usually send a nice supply box to you when you use the T menu. Matter of fact... when my team has a really rip roarin good commander, I usually ask my support guys to switch to something else! It all depends on your situation tho. If a bridge is down and you want a tank to go across an engineer is something that is nice to have. But if you are that slowed down by a single bridge.... there is something seriously wrong with your strategy anyways. I must say tho... engineer class is one that I would really like to see reformed. I was so disapointed when I found out that supply crates could repair destroyed command equipment. I thought that that was a main reason for engineers to exist. It would be really nice if an engineer had another special ability. Something REALLY usefull on the battlefield. Maybe the patch will fix it... EDIT: I just noticed you tried to poke fun at my tactics by saying that I dont ever do aynthing except attack.... I am quite the contrary! Sometimes the best offense can be a good defense. However... you cant win unless you take points.... and unless I have a really good engineer who knows what he is doing... I would just rather not have one. But thats just me.
