Er, over rated?

The only good thing I have ever heard anyone say about 5.56mm NATO is that it is easily controllable. Aside from that, it lacks the range and power that we really need these days. Hence us looking into higher caliber rounds for the M16 reciever.

word. The history of weapon cartridges is goofy because the ideal caliber and cartridge were discovered damn near 80 years ago and we keep putzing around until we'll eventually end up using the thing. The best bullet size in terms of weight, range, power, and accuracy is something in the high 6mm low 7mm range. thats like the .270 to roughly .320 range off of a cartridge around what, 39 to 45 or so? any larger a bullet and you lose down range ballistics without increasing the cartridge and doing that adds weight and recoil. The 6.8 is a decent bullet that even has the benfit of fitting in current STANAG magazines. the 6.5 is the best of the bunch but the dimensions of the round dont allow it to fit in unmodified magazines and receivers.

i say lets go back to the good old old days. lets use .55 cal. ball ammo. ok now seriously if you want to test the power of a bullet and its stopping power then look here. http://world.guns.ru/ammo/am03-e.htm on the far right of the table(the one that says E0 J) well it states the joules or power the round has when hitting a target aka stopping power. the higher that number the more powerful the round. the 5.56mm round has 1798 J. while the 7.62mm nato round has 3352 J. and a .50 cal round has 18,000 J.

Got to offset that by whether the round transfers all that energy to a target though. A .50 may mathmatically have 18000 joules of force but since the round will with almost complete certainty pass right through a target, all that energy isnt actually transfered. same with the 7.62mm. Stupid outdated rules force militaries to adopt FMJ full ball ammunition and the result is pissant energy use. .223 wouldnt be that bad a round if quality ballistic tip ammunition or blended metal designs were adopted but given that we're stuck. So we want a round that doesnt weigh as much as a .308 Nato but hits harder than a .223. Since brass is the heaviest part of a bullet and as far as i know has caused no enemy casualties to date, how bout we start redesigning that whole caseless thing again. might get it to work this time.

Yeah, apparently there is a pistol round being developed by/for police, that can penetrate armor/metal, but once it hits flesh it basically disintegrates, which I would think would be an excellent way to transfer energy. Unfortunately, it is a bit messy...

I know. That's why police are a but wary of using it, its not the easiest wound for a doctor or paramedic to clean
