So playing an early version of the eraser mod today and having fun with the extreme low gravity bullet time ragdollingTM I had an idea: Woulden't it just be amazing if HL2 had fists as a basic weapon. Then I could punch combine all the way down streets and into explosive barrels. Smash them sailing off cliffs and bridges etc.
Then I began to think; "well I could be a badass and not use guns at all then. Hold on, whats the ultimate badass who do not use guns? Why Ninja of course!"
So it could start small, just a fists model and the low gravity bullet time. Im sure a basic fists model can be ripped from somewhere?
Later, other things could be added if people with the right skills stepped up. Here is a list of my ideas.
- High Jumping
- Kunai (a kind of throwing knife) sticks people to walls
- Exploding Kunai (sticks to people, delay, explodes)
- Block Bullets with sword
- Telekenisis (replaces gravity gun)
One could really go to town with features and effects and this is just a sample of my ideas. I dont want to get carried away though, simple fists would be excellent :)

Oh to clarify yea I have done a search and have seen several threads about the same subject but they are all very old and didn't go anywhere. So Im just putting the idea out there again.
Good idea dude! I thought of a similar thing, but it's unfortunatly just like The Specialists for HL1 just without guns and more physics n stuff. But I do agree it is a good idea and if made well I'd play it definatly! Gotta have a 3rd person view though, that'd be nice ;)
Well you need to start small. A third person view would not be essential, it would probably need new maps anyway. I thought of sticking these things into the normal HL2 sp (mabye some extra enemies to kill)
Hell if someone could provide me with a working fists model I would try and learn how to put it ingame. ;)
You could make it kind of like Tenchu, except good. Nice concept.

All my ideas have come from things I have already seen done. What I mean is all my ideas are achievable and shoulden't need any research into new territories. Except for things covered in the last section (stage 3). They would only be attempted if the mod was popular and the creators wanted to continue.
Start small at first: Stage 1
- Bullet time
- Increase enemies in HL2 maps
First implement the bullet time seen in several mods, from what I have read this is rather simple.
A model of Ninja fists with a punch animation would be added, we know this is achievable and not too difficult as many people have been adding weapons to HL2 including melee weapons.
Increase the number of enemies in the HL2 levels since bullet time gives you a large advantage. You could then play the HL2 campaign punching people around.
Now we can get more complicated: Stage 2
- Exploding Kunai
- Ninpo (magic)
The sword is achievable as a simple melee weapon. The Fists model could be used again to hold the sword. The bullet blocking would not be implemented yet,
Shuriken could be implemented that stick to surfaces when you miss, we know this as there is already a weapon in HL2 that does that, the crossbow. The pinning ability would be removed. They could be fast firing but low damage and added to a quick button. This was done in the substance mod where you have a bindable button you can press to quickly throw grenades. The fists model used here too.
Kunai like the shuriken would be based off the crossbow. Fists model could be used again here.
Exploding Kunai would be possible as sticky grenades have been used in the Substance mod.
Telekenisis would be a simple replacement of the gravity gun using the fists model. Two reasons for putting this in the game are: its cool, you need the ability of the grav gun to complete some of the puzzles in HL2.
Ninpo would be some sort of fireball attack. This would be used to kill striders, gunships etc.
At this stage all the other weapons could be removed. Up to this point the amount of work required is still rather small. It would require only.
4 models (Shuriken, Fists, Kunai, Sword) 6 animations (Shuriken, Fists, Kunai, Sword, Telekenisis, Ninpo) 1 effect (Ninpo)
If it gets popular: Stage 3
- Sword Blocking
- Special effects
- Punch System
If the mod gets really popular or the people working on it want to continue then more difficult things could be attempted.
Sword blocking would be used to block bullets and enemy melee attacks (covered in extras).
Dashing would be a system where the user double taps and holds a direction key, they then run very very quickly in that direction with a little momentum so they cant stop immediatly. This would be used to close distance with remote enemies.
Special effects wouild be things like blur effects when dashing etc.
A simple system could be implemented to make punching a bit more skillful. The user has to time three punches correctly, if they do the fourth punch is a special very hard punch. Secondary attack could be a kick or punch that can be used when running/jumping.
Extra's would be anything people think is cool. New enemies, more weapons, more Ninpo, melee enemies. Melee enemies could be quite difficult to make so I have put them here in the last section. New maps could be made by anyone who likes the mod.
