Perhaps I have not seem the films that would make me realise the mastery of De Niro, Freeman etc. but I would put Al Pacino before De Niro. When De Niro is great he is formidable but it is rarer than Al Pacino who is your more consistent dependable actor with arguable a greater more practiced range (than De Niro). I also think Dustin Hoffman while not earth shattering is perhaps better than alot of ppl seem to think. Meryl Streep is great - though sometimes too detectably knowingly so - she used to impress me when I was little watching her films I never questioned what she was playing. Eastwood is good - but essentially he is Eastwood in every film as is Connery. I think Nicholson & De Niro are perhaps cut from the same cloth - both being pipped rangewise by Al Pacino but can comand screen with aplomb when at their most inspired / fortunate. Where these two perhaps have superior ability is in comedic timing. I don't see Pacino take many funny parts. There is a film where De Niro & Sean Penn play crooks on the run who run into a monestary to hide as monks (Hollywood would murder that concept at the moment) it is a very funny & rounded film. You can help but be carried along by it. Kind of old fashioned in terms of plot - but then plots were more robust then. Also think De Niro is magnetic as the simple small town guy in the Deer Hunter. Film is perhaps over rated, but he's good.

Hackman is good. Very good. Not necessarily good films (of late) & of course that has alot to do with whether ppl will have seen your best work - you not only have to be good but you have to have selected vehicles that will remain popular to be 'remembered'.

I agree with most of the list. De Niro definitely deserves to be on top.

Jack Nicholson would have to be number one on my list. Ever since I saw One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, one of the best movies I have ever seen. Its a little old and all, but its one of those 'timeless pieces'.
