I'm wondering if i should buy this game or not. I didn't get BF1942, but i heard it is very popular. However, i think that the gameplay is too open, and that the maps are too big, and that you are all spaced out, wandering around for ages , till you find someone to kill. Am i right, or is it completely different?? If you all say it is good, i will probably buy it.

Battlefield 1942 has the potential for what you described, but I rarely faced such circumstances without making a conscious effort. Playing online against a platoon of real people adds enough of the 'unpredictable' factor that makes it really fun. Yes, the maps are large, but I've never come across a time where I was bored. The size of the maps dictates the importance of vehicles. As for BFVietnam if your system can handle it I'd reccommend it. It's visually impressive and gameplay is just a little more intense than BF1942. The maps are slightly smaller, but really it's a different kind of war. Frankly I reccommend both - especially now that the BF1942 expansions are getting cheaper and cheaper, and so many mods make the base game even better. If I remember right, each expansion is $20 USD, and I think even the base game is only $20 as well. Also, as a side note - I've noticed that while in BF42 the scores of individual players were generally low with a few really high scoring people, in BFV the scores are fairly even on an individual basis. For an example, an average BF1942 map, one side will have a top scorer with 80 points, possibly a few below him with 30, and everyone else has 2-3 tops. In BFV I've found that you'll have a top scorer with about 60-80, a few under him with 40, and everyone else has at least 15.

You havent bought it SLAP! go out and buy it, dont bother with bf secret weapons or road to rome as they are a bit poor really and people tend to play the mods like DesertCombat,Forgotten hope etc etc. Theres rarely a time where i wonder a map looking for people without gunning someone down within a few seconds. This game is one of the best online games ive ever played.........its a must own

BUY IT!!! If you are looking for a Q3 deathmatch type action, this is not the game for you. You need to work as a TEAM in this game and complete certain objectives. Sure on some maps if you get shot down and chute to the jungle/desert. you will have to find your way to the nearest base. Don't get shot down ;) Just try the bf1942 demo and see if you like the style, but keep in mind that demo is VERY buggy, as the latest patch smoothed it out BIG time. Desert Combat is one of the best MODS to date for BF1942, you should love that. My advice is to buy both BF1942 and BFV, you will have countless hours of fun. Again, if you are into team based games and don't mind NOT having the highest kills in the game to complete the win for your TEAM. Guard the base, blow up ebeny towers, whatever it takes to help your TEAM to win. Some of the best players have the lowest scores. Which brings me to rant,,,,,,,GIVE us POINTS for blowing towers up and ect!!!!!!

Bottom line....buy it.

bf1942 was the coolest thing when i was a "beginner" to it. it was like a whole new type of game that no body had ever played before. you could do almost everything you could have done in ww2. bfV is like that just with a lot more features. id say buy it!

BF1942 was so damn awesome when I first got it, and I feel the same way about Vietnam, the choppers are awesome, the warfare is intense and the song "Surfin' Bird" is awesome

If you've got a fairly decent machine, by all means get it. Yes, there are bugs (though there are more flat-out complaints about personal issues with the game that various people have moreso than actual gameplay bugs). I can say that I wish it shipped with more maps, but I think that's the only gripe. If DICE/EA keep up their good customer relations, then more official maps will be out in due time (with patches... like BF1942).

Lastly, if the mod scene takes off in any way like it did for BF1942, then this is going to have a helluva good lifespan to it.

Go buy it. Now.

Most I've seen in these forums is personal opinion/problems rather than just technical flaws.

Yeah I was a bit annoyed with what seemed like the lack of maps. I was even ticked at the map recycling like Hue/Reclaiming Hue and Quang Tri 68/71 but like you said: if EA/DICE keeps up the work they did for the '42 series we'll be doing fine. Quite right. I mean - Hell - the DC crew made a kick ass mod for BF42. I'm sure with this new engine, and the 'straight from the developers' map editor, the mod community will be able to repeat the success of all the good '42 mods.
