Ah, so they keyboard and mouse must really feel awkward to you. Back in 2001 I was still playing completely with the keyboard, I refused to use the mouse for anything because it was simply too difficult. Then, after playing someone who was really good at Dark Forces II: Jedi Knight, I learned they were using a mouse. I decided right then and there that I would learn to use it. Guess what? It didn't take very long before I became quite comfortable using it.
My suggestion is to start up an easy coop server and just experiment with the keyboard and mouse for a little while by yourself. Eventually it will become as easy as the console for your PS2 games. :)
I've been doing instant battles, Practiceing with Helicopters, I'll never get Jets they move to fast for me to control so i may invest in a Joystick. I'm pretty good it's just the lag is worse then Socom II, Wich is pretty sad. But yeah that's why i suck, Cuz i'm used to controllers in FPS.
i bought my stepfather a playstation type joystick for the computer so he could play 1942 cause he wasn't used to using mouse and keys, when i tried programming it there was no way to program the mouse-look/aim controls for the infantry so aiming was impossible and flying with the controller was just hacked, be patient and learn the mouse and keys or get a joystick, it make take some time but like beefy said you will be thankful later.
i forgot to mention myaxmotosis, since u are use to using the mouseball, try the logitech trackman wheel mouse, it is what i use for every vehicle and infantry in the game, it takes a little getting used to and may be painful if you lack dexterity in your mouse hand (if you play a musical instrument it should be no problem) and in my opinion is superior to any joystick or controller
Set your keys up for step left/step right so you can strafe a little (not much in this game) Aiming with your mouse is 100X better than any controller, you will see. You will get the hang of it, hang in there. As for flying with keys, Try quickly tapping the keys to maintain control. The MIG21 is a beast but again, you will get the hang of it. By the time Half Life 2 and DOOM3 come out, you will be a pro ;) any more help ya need just ask.
My keys setup for ground are like this: A= jump LEFT SHIFT = step left X= Step right Space BAR= Backwards Q= Next Weapon Z= Prone V= Crouch Left ALT= Reload Weapon
Right Mouse Button= Walk forward Left Mouse Button= Fire Middle Mouse Scroll Wheel= Zoom C= Camera View
Weird setup I know, but that is my same setup from Quake3 days so Iam used to it ;)

Yes, that is a bit strange. I remember my first fps. My controls were as following:
Left Shift = Forward Ctrl = Backward A = Turn Left L = Turn Right D = Crouch K = Jump Enter = Primary Fire Right Shift = Secondary Fire F- Keys = Various Inventory Items
Don't ask me how I got those settings, all I know is that they weren't default. Besides that game my controls are basically the same as everyone else.
I have eveything on defult except prone which is shift and my alt fire for planes and choppers its the alt keys
Wow. Beef and Riles, those are some bizarre keyboard setups. But hey... you guys have proven that whatever works for you, works. My setup is fairly standard:
W = Forward S = Back A = Sidestep Left D = Sidestep Right Space = Jump Left Shift = Crouch Left CTRL = Prone Q = Parachute Tab = Scoreboard C = Camera View E = Enter/Exit Vehicle 9 = "3D" Map (only hit it once at the beginning of each board, so it may as well be out of reach) G = Change out gear/kit R = Reload Left Mouse = Primary Fire Right Mouse = Zoom/Secondary Fire (like for the XM148) Mousewheel = Scroll through weapons Mouse button 4 = Pistol (sometimes I need to pull it out faster than waiting for a reload) Mouse button 5 = Hand grenades Mouse X,Y Axis = Look around Number keys = Quick inventory selection Not too far from the default, but a little. I use this setup (or as close as I can get) in every single FPS I play so that I don't get confused as to what key does what.
