if you bring up twin engines planes, then Im sorry, but nothing can beat the P-38...until the F9F came, anyways...

I think you meant the F7F Tigercat. The F9F was the single engined Panther jet used in Korea.

As for twin engine...I would throw a British Westand Whirlwind in as an opponent or a Jap Ki-83.

The Seafang was the navalised variant of the Spiteful, and it was supposed to replace the Seafire on carriers.

The P-38J was an awesome twin engined fighter. The Hornet was also pretty good.

No, I meant F9F...Just out of context of the question, though...implying that the P-38J was the greatest plane period until the F9F was produced...If you only want twin engines planes, then I suppose the Glostor meteor for the british, the P-38J for the americans obviously, the CAC Woomera for the austrailians(I know not many were made, nor being a fighter, but it rocked anyways...it was twin engined, right?),Bf110(Fighter-bomber, correct? Not sure about type) for germans...
