I found the problem - it's to do with the LOD selectors. However, some of the parts (rudder, ailerons, elevators) still show up with the original skin while the rest is the new skin.

yeah i noticed you had not defined the lod selector but had referred to it. it's best to have everything in one file and not try to call back to other vehicles. did you create and name the lodselector something like "F4U-1DCockpitSelector"?

I just didn't have the lodSelector for the cockpit or entire thing at all.....kind of a stupid stuff-up, but now it appears in-game and I can experience they joy of blasting carriers out of the water in Coral Sea with 8 5" rockets. Yay.
