This problem is quite inconvenient. I followed the steps to re-installing the patch after I install special forces and I can play the game fine. When I try joining a server, it just brings me back to the desktop with no error messages. I even went into the registry to retype my s/n. My computer should be more then enough to play on the net.

How long are you waiting? When I log onto SF the game appears to crash but after about 20-30 seconds it comes back and takes me to the server i selected. Try it again but this time allow your comp a few moments to go through the process. I know its annoying. Good luck
Hey everyone i am having problems too with the server it comes back to the desktop and i left it there to see if it came back and then it came me an error about my BF2.exe. If anyone has an idea how to get the server to work please let me also cause thats the best part about BF2

GHOST_8888: I had the same problem with BF2, and i think it's kind of related to running an ati card on Nvidia nForce4 chipsets.
I have an Asus A8N5X http://www.asus.com/products.aspx?l1=3&l2=15&l3=207&model=596&modelmenu=1 Socket 939, Athlon XP 3200+ venice, and a Sapphire X1600XT (ATi).
All 3d games were just crashing like hell, most of them still do, but i managed to get bf2 stable at last.
I had to completely uninstall the Nvidia firewall (I kinda hate it, too), remove ALL Nvidia Nforce drivers that I had downloaded from nvidia.com, and instead use the drivers from the asus driver download (chipset, sound, etc) Note: without installing the frecking nvidia firewall.
Now BF2 is stable, but other 3d online games keeps crashing.
Oh yeah, before i forget: SinglePlayer BF2 DIDN'T crash.... That's why I'm guessing (I've spent alot of hours dealing with this) it has something to do with the Nvidia Chipset and/or firewall and/or LAN unit...
Also, my colleague Had ALOT of similar problems on an DFI NF4 board. Using Ati X850. I had a s-754 system at that time, with no problems, with both trying nvidia and ATi cards.
Hope this helps, but I'm still having troubles, so I hope we can get to the bottom of this.
Also, the windows system logs doesn't show any errors when the crash occurs.
I would die without GF

If you have a firewall try disabling that and see what happens.
