Hey all, I've recently noticed that, when playing as commander, if I decide to zoom all the way in on the commander map and then exit the map my average fps goes down like crazy (-20 fps) and my game starts running very slowly. My average fps is 34-55 and after zooming in with commander it goes as down as 14-35. The odd thing is that if I alt+tab out then back in it goes back to normal! Could this be a memory leak issue? Only 2 other guys on planetbattlefield and totalbf2 reported the same issue. I'm unsure either this is caused by the game itself or by our system specs. Everyone else seems to report that they have no problems but some either forget to zoom all the way in on the map or just have a high average fps (like 60-90) so they wouldn't notice much if they game went down to 40-70 avg fps. I really need to know if this is a problem that needs to be fixed in a next patch or if it's just my system that is causing the problem. - If this is not much to ask and even if you haven't noticed any slowdowns with commander satellite zoom lately could you please just go into singleplayer, apply as commander, go to somewhere where fps is stable and then zoom all the way in with satellite anywhere on the commander map and exit it afterwards. To check your fps before and afterwards just type in console:"renderer.drawfps 1" (but you knew that already :) ) So here are my system specs: Intel P4 3.21 GHz ATI RADEON 9800XT 256 MB w/ latest ati 5.9 catalyst drivers 2GB RAM DDR (2x1GB - Before I had 2x512MB and was having the same problem) Windows XP SP2 SB Audigy 2 Running the game with all settings on High and 2xAA. Thanks for taking your time to help! :cya:

One of my clanmates has the same problem, and he has a good machine (he loads second on the map, after me :naughty:). I will direct him here, and hopefully there is a solution for this.

Thanks, I've been doing some more tests and compared them with a friend of mine who has a PCI 6600 GT 128 MB, 1GB RAM and P4 3.4 ghz.

It seems has absolutely no fps drop when he closes the Commander menu after zooming 3x with satellite... so I can conclude this issue is not related to RAM nor with Graphics card memory. Is your clanmate's GFX card AGP or PCI? I've just noticed that after closing commander menu my game will be very slow (even if I set texture filtering and lightning to medium) but if I go back in the menu and even zoom in with satellite my fps go back to 35-55 till I close it again and my fps are once again 15-30... very odd. :( I'm guessing this problem probably happens only on AGP cards.

*EDIT* I finally found which setting was causing me all of this. I left all settings on high but the Texture setting (set it to Medium) and fps doesn't drop anymore after I zoom 3x and exit commander menu. It's probably the first sign that my ATI9800xt 256 mb agp is old already lol. Hopefully I'll upgrade at the end of the year... right in time for FH2 I hope hehehe. Nevertheless I found a great way if you want an additional 10-20 fps :p See the underlined text below on how to do it! *EDIT* Once again more tests, this time with positive and unexpected results but it didn't fix the problem: 1. I opened the commander menu as usual and zoomed 3x then closed the menu. Noticed my fps going from 45 to 20. 2. Tried to open/close constantly the commander menu to no avail. Then I tried to do a quick combo - "Open Commander+immediatly zoom in with mouse wheel+immediatly close as soon as you zoom" - Surprisingly (and stupidly!) my fps went from 20 to 70!!! It wasn't even my average in-game FPS (which was 35-55). 60-75 was pratically the average of fps when I was in the commander menu. It was like as if I was in-game with the commander menu fps'. It's pratically the same as doing alt+tab but much faster. I then proceeded to test the commaner menu once again in 2 ways: - I re-opened the commander menu and closed it without zooming 3x -> average fps went back to 35-55. - I re-opened the commander menu, zoomed 3x and closed it -> average fps went down to 14-35. So many tests and various odd results and arrrgh! I still can't figure out what the hell is going on! :banghead: And it seems as if I'm all alone here... in the 1.03 release notes this isn't refered. I'm still guessing it's an AGP issue... till I see someone who has an AGP card that doesn't notice fps drop.

I will test it with my AGP 6800gt once I can be commander

I wonder if EA is trying to screw all of us with AGP cards?

Hydra was nice enough to direct me to this thread. AFAIK the only thing we all share is that we have Intel CPUs and ATI cards.

My specs are:

P4 3.4EE 2GB 3200 X800XT PE Raid 0 Running 5.9 cats (just tried the ones without CCC today - same issue)

I never knew that alt-tabbing fixes this, that alone is a great help as with 2gb an alt-tab is usually instant, and as commander it's not like you cant spare a second. You know, I used to have my FPS drop to 20 and lock there, and 10-15 secs later shoot back to my usuall 45-65, for NO REASON at all, I tried everything and eventually had to format for another reason and the problem went away.

This is basically the same thing I think, we just need to find the common cause.:uhm:

EDIT - The one thing I am just thinking about is Itouch. You know the software that runs on Logitech keyboards, for on-screen volume or something. Perhaps the OSD is interfering with BF2, as it does in Doom3 if you hit cap/num lock or the volume knob in the game, it will loose focus and screw up, similar if peeps login to MSN.

Hey [SYN] BigMak, glad you joined the discussion, Is your "X800XT PE" PCI or AGP? About that trick of getting extra +20 fps it's not good after all. What I noticed when you quickly zoom and exit the menu is that the terrain gets lowest quality and that's why you get extra fps. If you open commander menu again it loads the high terrain textures correctly and gets slower again. Oh and about setting Textures to Medium being the solution... not much after all. I've been playing today on a 32 player server and indeed at the first 3x satellite zoom and exiting I didn't get any slowdown but like 2 minutes later and about 2-5 minutes of zooming, using UAVs, arty and supplies it got slower as usual thanks to the familiar -20 fps drop. About that Logitech software thingie I doubt that's causing the problem. It's not because you open the commander menu (caps lock) that there is a fps drop but because of zooming 3x in it. My keyboard is Genius Wireless too so I guess it's not that that's causing the problem...

Some guy on the planetbattlefield forums told me I run the game with too many high settings but I'm fine with them! It runs smooth all the time expect only when I'm commander and I use it's menu functions...

I'm gonna try and do some more tests on 32 and 64 players as I only had tested on 16 singleplayer. This time, besides Texture, I'm going to set Lighting and, if the problem persists, Dynamic Lightning to Medium as these 2 are the only settings I don't notice much difference in-game.

I noticed a few times my CAPS lock key being auto-toggled really fast... I pressed it once (not while commanding though), and then my screen started flickering and the game slowed down to 10-15 FPS (from the usual 60-70)... The flickering was so fast, it took me a while to figure that this "flicker" was actually the "Squads" interface coming up very quick. I looked on the keyboard and saw the CAPS lock light go on and off really fast....

Happened only twice though.

Could this be the problem both of you are having?

Well, I've never noticed any flickering and I never payed much attention to the CAPS lock light either since the wireless device is under the monitor. However, I do notice that BF2 has implemented some code or system that I have never seen in any other game that makes CAPS lock turn off immediatly when you press it, I'll try using other key instead but I highly doubt it's that the cause of the problem. Also I only have this problem when I zoom 3x. If I only press CAPS to open/close the commander menu and if I don't zoom (or just zoom 2x) I will have no fps drop. I was guessing it would be because my system is on the verge of the limit but BigMak's is better than mine but it still has problems so I'm wondering if his card is AGP or PCI?

BigMak seems to mistrust PCI-E, so i would assume he's got an AGP. But don't quote me on this
