Yeah... I can verify SP maps data in about 5 seconds... When I go online, it changes to five minutes. Takes about 4 times the length it takes to load the actual map. Reaaaally annoying....

The length of time it takes to verify is a function of your HDD speed, it takes different times for different ppl depending on HDD type and configuration but in general it is between 2-5 minutes for everybody.

The offline SP is always quicker because it is not worried about verifying as much user data for cheaters.

thnx,,, i have a 160 gig hd @7200 rpmw/ 8 meg buffer

That's average these days, I always get into the game after my friend, I have a single 120Gb 7200rpm 8mb cache sata, he has two in raid 0 config. It may also depend on fragmentation of the HDD. Since I am sure it is scanning the user data on the HDD for cracks and exploits (cause it is hitting the HDD fairly hard) it may help if you defrag your HDD (have you tried that yet?)

Going by that, the less players in the server will lower the time it takes to verify the data because there is less work to do. My HDD is in a terrible state right now, it's near death as lots of files are becoming corrupt and I can't even defrag or chkdsk /f. At all. If I get a new HDD or do a factory restore I will post to say if it speeds the loading up. (Which it should)

Also, would RAM help? Or are there any other important factors?

im assuming more ram wont help because it checks ur bf 2 directory for the same files the server has.. (no cheats hopefully) ..so thats out.. but it doesent take 5 min for me (seems like it) but its like 3 min.. and i have a rather slow 60gb drive... i think its 5000 or 6000 rpm laptop drive

My advice is get more memory, I had a 1 gig corsair and it took about 2-3 mins to verify but then i got 2 gigs (total) and it probably takes less than a minute now. Worked for me, may not work for some.

I did some timings last night over 3 maps succesively on the same server without leaving, to see how long it really takes me to verify client data; 3:59, 3:36, 3:51. Me = Running a 160GB 7200RPM SATA drive much alike the one posted before. My HD is, like I said, in a terrible state right now and it is simply impossible to defrag it due to the defrag files being corrupt alongside lots of windows stuff. I do suspect it will speed it up by a minute or more, which would please me greatly. Also, I only have 512MB RAM, and going by the chap above me, that isn't helping.

I can confirm what ptownlax503 is saying: RAM helps. Not too long ago I went from 1 GB to 2 GB of RAM. The verifying client data is faster now. But I think it can depend on various settings. I have all the setting of my game to HIGH except one, Dynamic Shadows are on medium. Res. set to 1024 x 768 with 4x AA and Filtering at High. An important setting is Sound and I have mine set to Hardware/High/EAX. If I'm not mistaken setting it to High takes up a more RAM than lower settings! I also have Norton's AV and Firewall installed, and Norton's is known to take up a fair amount of RAM. The reason it's faster for me now is because... when I had 1 GB of RAM, the verifying client data process also involved a lot of swapping to the paging file on my HDD. If I had been running with lower settings at that time, which take up less RAM, then perhaps I would not have had so much swapping to my paging file involved during the verifying client data process. Now that I have 2 GB of RAM, there is no swapping/paging to my HDD, so the additional RAM sped things up nicely when it comes to verifying client data. Hope that helps, OneTinSoldier System Specs: Intel 3.4C(C = Northwood Core) on Asus P4C800-E Deluxe(Intel 875P + ICH5R Chipset), Zalman 7000a-Cu HS/Fan, Enermax RG651P-VE 550W PSU, 2 GB Mushkin eXtreme Performance(2-2-2) Dual Channel PC3200 RAM, NEC MultiSync FE2111SB 21" CRT Monitor, Sapphire Radeon X800 XT PE Videocard with v5.8 Catalyst Drivers, DirectX 9.0c, Creative Audigy2 Platinum Soundcard with Creative OpenAL Beta Driver, 250 GB w/8 MB Cache Western Digital HDD, Comcast Cable Internet Connection, WinXP Pro SP2, Nortons Anti-Virus and Personal Firewall 2005
