Should I get a Ge-Force 5200 with 256megs of ram or another type of Ge-Force video card? Please note, I am NOT GETTING AN ATI CARD, I HATE THEIR CARDS, SO PLEASE DO NOT SAY GET AN ATI CARD OR I WILL FLAME YOU ENTIRELY. ONLY SAY WHAT GE-FORCE CARDS I SHOULD GET INSTEAD OF THE GE-FORCE 5200. Thank you, that is all, also, be aware, I only got 200 bucks to spend with this on the video card. Specs: Ge-Force 2 AMD Athlon XP 2200+ 256Megs of Ram (Getting upgraded to 512 next month) Windows 98

This is what I'm using...

Pentium 4 2.4GHz 512 MB DDR GeForce4 Ti4200 128MB

From what I have heard, I will get pretty good graphics, the only drawback is that I only have a DX 8 card, so I will not get full appreciation of water effects, etc. I have heard that the 5200 doesn't test as well as the 4200, but I am not an expert and could have misunderstood someone else. I would try to find the test results of the various cards with Half-Life 2. I know they are floating around somewhere here...

the only GeForce FX cards that are worth anything are the 5900 and the 5950. i recently bought a 5600 ultra and i wish i hadnt. my old GeForce 4 MMX 440 gets better fps than my 5600.

as the 5900 and the 5950 are rather expensive and since you are solely going for an nvidia card you would do better with a Ti 4600 or Ti 4200

the GeForce FX line between 5200 and 5800 are worthless, i wish i hadnt wasted money for the 5600 i bought.

this is just my opinion...

Ive heard the 5700 is pretty decent. Allthough you can get the non ultra version of the FX5900 for £175, it will be cheaper in the states cos u dont have to pay 17.5% of rip of tax. Should be around $200.

Hmm.. I can't say, "Get ATI," but can I say, "Get a clue!" 8D I couldn't help myself.. Anyway, have you checked out benchmarks for the 5200? As suggested by others here, that's a good starting point in making your decision. Now since you're on a GF 2, you could go up to just about anything and see a huge improvement, so you might want to consider upgrading to a very cheap card as a temporary solution, possibly even an MX (can't believe I just suggested that) although the GF3 Ti 500 sometimes tests better than the MX's.. heh. But with Half-Life 2 two to four months away at least, you may just be better off buying cheap, saving your money, then upgrade with what's on the market when HL2 comes out. You're almost guaranteed that Nvidia will have released a much better batch of video cards by then and if those are still too pricey at that time, you can buy something that performs better than the 5200 for roughly the same cost as what you would've paid for the 5200 now.

OK first off you need to think about the spending money you have here. You could get an evga nvidia GeForce fx 5600 256meg for about $130. If you want my personal refference i would say go to www.newegg.com or www.tigerdirect.com trust me, it is a whole lot better than a 5200 regular.

I have the 256mb geforce fx 5200 in my system. Its a good budget card, wouldnt give hl2 what it deserves but still pretty good. It supports fresnal reflections, per pixel shading and such. but id suggest, if u have the money, anything above the fx5600 would be better. Max payne 2 runs smooth as hell on the 256 fx5200. At about 30-60fps with everything on. :)
