currently i have 512 megs of SD ram, and i have the p4 Asus mother board, but it doesn't support DDR ram, how much APPROX. will it cost me to upgrade to a newer mother board and some faster ram. And is it going to be that big of a difference in the playability of Half life 2??

It will be a major difference. Your best bet for performance right now is to get a dual channel capable motherboard and use two sticks of DDR (2 sticks are needed to take advantage of dual channel) I would try to stay in the ddr 2100 to 2700 range as right now PC3200 is still a bit iffy with most motherboards. Depending on where you look prices will vary. For a decent motherboard expect to pay anywhere from 90 to 150 bucks. Ram is cheap and contrary to popular belief you really wont get any more performance out of expensive brand name ram than you would with generic ram. Unless your a huge overclocker, ram is ram so save yourself some bucks. I bought a gig of PC2700(2 sticks 512) about 4 months ago for 90 dollars online. CHEAP! If you search hard enough a couple hundred dollars can breathe new life into your slower machine. :)
