This is what's going on so far. Valve CANNOT confirm exactly what was taken, that is the official word coming from them. They are still pain-stalking going through their logs VERY slowly. Keep in mind, they did not even realized the source code was stolen until it was released on the internet. Translation: Do not rule out the possibility of a beta. Now, according to an unidentified member of myg0t, the beta was in fact taken. Totalling 1.32GB of data, and that one of the clans have a copy of it, but are with-holding it from releasing it for obvious reasons (for the time-being anyway). Basically, the source code was only the tip of the ice berg... whoever stole it released ONLY the source code, almost as a teaser to the community, and they may yet decide to unleash the entire thing. Now get this, several team members from Valve broke the lockdown and have made a few comments (no identification, they wished to remain anonymous, but they are confirmed to be legit Valve employees). Most distressing is this... they said that Valve is looking at a minimum of SIX lawsuits, possibily more depending on the total damage. And that there have also been talk WITHIN Valve of scrapping the entire game. They also claimed that an estimated 1.32GB of data was transferred off Valve's computers, which matches the 1.32GB beta reported to be stolen. The latest development is this... starting yesterday several simple, custom-made maps were released that allowed people to walk around in a small room using the HL2 engine. Today, the people have dug up and activated the MULTIPLAYER code... and IT WORKS. The latest rumour is this... the full beta will be released on the internet at midnight tonight, but there has been no confirmation of this. According to a number of inside-sources, things may get a lot worst, and the worst-case scenario is the cancellation of Half-Life 2 (a probability) and the shutting down of Valve (less likely but still possible at this point due to the lawsuits).--- -Winkle

this is bad. bad. very bad. very very very bad.
jesus thats bad. but i doubt they will cancel HL2. it just can't happen. who ever stole that file is pretty dam low, must be some really desperate freak hacker bitch.
Why do valve face lawsuites?
i dunno why it Valve is facing lawsuits, but i still wont rule out cancelling or very-delaying HL2, so i guess ill buy COD instead and buy HL2 some other time.
the tools used to hack Valve was all specifically modified to enter Valve. these guys are pretty desparate...
Valve can be sued becuase they are using 3rd party technology such as the Havoc engine. So Valve have obviousley signed an agreement/licensed it so that noone but Valve would view that source code that hasn't paid for the license AKA other programming company's that haven't licensed the technology. Simply this is why Valve can and probably will be sued.
As for whether the game will be released at all I don't have a clue. We'll just have to wait and see
It's times like this when I want to nuke computer geeks, why don't we give them some REAL virus' and kill 'em all, good for nothing button bashers they are!
Thats exactly what I'd do Brookster. Have they really got nothing better to do with their time than write little viruses. The thing that they dont realise is that they've set the release date of HL2 even further than it was before.. if it comes out at all.......
