This may be a long message, but please keep reading. I hope it will be worth your while. Briefely this text is about enhanceing Bridge Commnder to becoming more of a Starship Commander with everything that that entails, including away missions, thousands and thousands of star systems, 3D ship interiors and more. Read on: I’ve waited at least seven years for the game that I thought was Bridge Commander – the game where you would be able to FREELY command a starship of your own. Unfortunately, I feel BC has some limits. For example, there is a limited number of systems, to which you can travel. This is fine in the BC storyline, but I want more... Another thing is the combat nature of the game. A lot of you may think this is fine but if you watch Star Trek episodes most of them involve only a limited amount of space combat. So what do I want to say with all of this? Well, before BC I created a number of Star Trek games that were supposed to simulate the experience of a Star Trek world. I dabbled with simple 2D and 3D engines but they didn’t really work so I had to compensate with more features, etc. For example, I have created a psedo-random (the-same-random-number-every-time) galaxy, not unlike the one seen in the ”Elite” games of the 80s. This engine covers all four quadrants of the Star Trek Galaxy and includes stations, bases, etc, but also nebulae and other space phenomena. This program also includes an optional part where you can take a more active role as the ship’s Captain. Here you can manage shift rotations, recieve reports form your officers, create science or ship-improvement projects and assign the right blend of tallent for the task. You can select any person you like from your crew and make dicisions with ragard to dozens of skills and personality attributes. You can also select crew for away missions that you order and follow their progress from the ship, or if you prefer, you can even beam down with them to an M-class planet (there will be a number of ”planet maps” that will be chosen at random and have you start at a random location). This last feature requires that you have ”Dark Forces II – Jedi Knight” and its add-on ”Mysteries of the Sith” from LucasArts but they cost about 3-5 bucks each. The 3D engine of this game is also used for the next major issue of this project – the ship itself. Haven’t you ever, while playing BC, wanted to get up out of the command chair and walk around to the ship? Maybe you would like to go down to engineering and see what Brex is up to or just go to your quarters or to ten forward to relax while off duty. This is now possible with the Jedi Knight engine. I have already started construction of several ships (I couldn’t make up my mind which kind would be best). The ones that have come into question are: Galaxy class, Sovereign class, Intrepid class and Defiant class. The one currently entering the design phase (nice huh?) is the Sovereign. The others have so far been dismissed because of their size (too big or too small...) Please understand that this won’t be a ”budget” version of the ships like the add-on for Elite Force, where only two thirds of the decks are there, less than ten per cent of the doors open and more than half of the available decks are sealed of by force fields. On my ships you have access to everything except crew quarters (there’s kind of a lot...), except for your own of course and maybe a few others... The ships are also interactive. Some of the features that are currently working are: Transporters, replicators, holodecks, security survailance, variable gravity and red and green alert modes. Maybe you’re thinking that this is another one of those dreams that will never become a reality and maybe you’re right, but the programmes themselves are all but complete. Just a few additional things are required, and as far as the 3D ship is concerned I have already completed one Galaxy class, one Defiant class and two Intrepid classes, but these are of such poor quality that I can’t release them with a clear concience (can’t spell that). So what do I want from you? The answer is feedback, ideas, thoughts, etc. And lots of it. Maybe someone would like to help in a more substancial way? You tell me! I have not immersed myself in the scripts and tweaks of the BC engine and that is another thing I’ll need help with if we’re going to be able to adapt my programs to BC. So please RESPOND!!!
Well... one little flaw...
The gaming populace is made up of mainly young people, maybe 9-14 and then upwards from there.
I doubt people would be interested in managing shift rotations. Sure, I know you would be, but some like BC the way it is, and I myself don't think I could improve it better.
The first law in making games is to ALWAYS cater to the gaming population.
Why do you think we dumped games like EGA Trek and Final UNity for Quake and BC?
Because we like the starship combat, we don't want to solve mysteries or kill Klingons in a 2D environment...
That's my two cents...
personally i think its a good idea i've had daydreams about everything you just described years before bridgecommander came out with some exceptions that the company who mad the game had these mega servers the would hold the game universe and it would evolve like a real galaxy with you being able to go anywhere you chose and have either AI or human controlled enimies depending on whose fleet you joined. but it probably would never be done but i love youridea anyway.
erm... grammar check?
myself, i'd just like to be able to warp to every known system in the ST Universe, but knowing that's a lot, it'd probably never happen. although it would be interesting if it were possible to tour the entire federation... maybe with some combat while at warp as well... But i'd just like to be able to explore the entire ship. Not be glued to the seat. Even just a wander around type thing, looking at things. Talking to random crew members. Making frivolous use of the holodeck... like say a simulation of world war two perhaps... (like say, make BC launch your other games from the holodeck, assuming you have more then one CD-ROM).

I found your proposal intresting. But I agree with the others. Go to this link below. There are many talented modders and scripters in the BCN forums. Please regester and post your ideals. I think they have merit. And since you have a work in progress. I'm sure you can find someone to help you out here.
Good luck on your project.

I think it's a Great idea, I've always wanted to have totaly command over a starship, And your ideas are things that i've thought about for years, I've played the hell out of my sttg final unity game, untill the thing was SO scrached up it would not play, and i still love the game, i remember i paid 60 bucks for that old game way back when 60 Bucks !! :O) but now i have BC and i love the look and feel of it, i would love to see REAL Cannon bridges for all the ships , I'm sure it's just a matter of time, But i wanted to say I have also played deep space nine the fallen, and i loved that you could walk around the who defiant and go everywhere that game was alsome, and my Emachines celeron cpu 766 wiht 384 megs of ram and 20 gig hard drive with on board sound and on board video could play just fine, I think they could have tweaked the game a bit other then that i loved it, Something like an Unreal-engine based game would do for the next star trek games.. thanks for reading this
That Sounds Like a Great Idea!
This 'dream' you propose sounds like a great idea, and if you ever complete it, i will be amoung the first to try it. Just remember tho, if you start somthing, you damn well better finish it! see, if i start somthing, ill get bored of it and do somthing else, thats why i never get anything done. ;) Also, If you set your mind to somthing, you can accomplish it no matter what.
Good Luck On Your Project
There's no such thing as "canon" anymore. The directors change the bridges as they see fit to make them look nice on the show. I like the idea but it will be close to impossible to make something of this caliber work. You would have to have at least 5 DVD discs burned for this, and the costs of such a game would be tromendous. Who would want to pay for something like that that will keep them busy for a year? There has to be something dynamic about it...Too much freedom is a bad thing as people will start to live in the game. I don't want to turn into Reginald Barkley. Other than that, I like the idea of it. I hope someone can see it through and pitch it to some good company to lisence it and release it for a low price, but I can't help being pessimistic.
Sweeney, I have also thought about this. But what your planning is a tad farfetched, but don't get me wrong it would be an amazing thing.
The more realistic thing to do is to combine aspects of Elite Force and Bridge Commander together. So the player commands their starship (just like in BC) and also participates in FPS roles like away teams or defending the ship against boarding aliens. This would be at most a 2 CD game. That was my 'dream' of BC.
I bet most of you know this, but Elite Force 2 IS taking place aboard a Sovereign class vessel. Enterprise-E I think.
Yeah...Elite Force is different genre though. I would like to have some...SOME...of that freedom while at the same time having most of what bridge commander is offering...A little walk around the ship is fine, but most of the action should take place on the bridge as in actual Star Trek shows..
