Man am I getting frustrated...

I'm on episode 2 of the game and I can't seem to get close enough to the Karoon to use my tractor beams before it's too late and it crashes and burns. How do I get close enough? I't always says tractor beams out of range. :(

Target it, hit Ctrl-I. Move within 20KM of the freighter, come to a stop and lock tractors.

When you enter the Beol System lock on to the unidentified ship that was not damage. Boost engiens to 125% and order Kiska to intercept. Distract The Warbird by firing at her, she will break her tractor lock and cloak. Then lock on to the Karoon turn on the tractor, and intercept. Bring the Karoon's speed to zero.

Once this is done The Warbird will attack. Just make sure you keep a weapons lock on The Warbird. Target her "Cloaking Device" with your phasers set to low. This will damage the subsystem faster. And learn to use your "X" key. That launches the torpedoes, and some manual firing from you "The Player" will be required, for the higher game levels. And do not pursue The Warbird to far into the Asteroid Belt. If you leave the Karoon unprotected, The Warbird will destroy her.

Once the Cloaking Device is knocked off line, the Warbird will retreat. And the Karoon will be safe.

First, you don't need to fire on the Warbird. It cloaks when you approach, regardless of what you do.

Low power phasers do not damage a sub-system faster, all they do is prevent damage to the hull.

I have NEVER seen the Warbird attack the Karoon. I have played that mission probably a dozen times on every difficulty level and it never fired a single shot at the freighter.

Perhaps that is your experience. First off setting phasers to "low" will damage the subsystems faster, since Picard suggest the tactic in the first place?

I have trained people to play this game in (3) Star Trek Gaming Fleets. No, you "don't" need to fire on the Warbird, but doing so will break the tractor lock. If you let that Warbird continue dragging the Karoon. She will be to close to the asteroid field. So when you engage the Warbird, the Karoon will become adrift. And slam right in to a rock. And if you let the Warbird distract you from protecting the Karoon. She will attack. If you are 60 to 80 km away. You will not be able to make it in time to save her. Hold your ground and Protect the karoon. Which is your "primary" mission objective?

I believe this was the jive's "original" question? it's a proven tactic. I hope he tries it out.

Honestly, the low power thing doesn't damage a subsystem faster. It just damages only a sub system. Using high power will do the same thing, but it will also decreass the overall hull integrity, and if you are interested in only disabling a target, that is fine. But if your target has full shields, or you wish to destroy it, just use high power.

Low power will also give you faster recharge time when your power systems are drained, and that might give you an edge.

But honestly, if this dude can't catch a moving freighter with a tractor and deal with one cowardly warbird, he's going to ahev big problems later.

All you need to do, is select the Karoon, order kiska to intercept, set you engines and shields to 125%, and turn on the tractor beam (even when its out of range).

The tractor beam will engage the moment you are in range of the Karoon.

While this is going on, set your weaps to 125%. Then when youre tractor beam starts to fire and if you want to, tell felix, to target at will and destroy, he will refuse to fire on a friendly ship, but...

The moment the karoon comes to a stop, and the rest of the mission script runs, and the warbird uncloaks, felix will begin the attack immediatly. Although you may have to tell him to 'destroy' again.

I must say though, I found this bit pretty easy...
