Before you divulge yourselves in this article, I would just like to point out the following. This rant is not aimed at COD2. It is not aimed at its pitiful lack of cheat protection, it is not aimed at the weapons that all sound the same, it is not aimed at the bizarre health system and it is defiantly not aimed at the lack of vehicles. While bad points they be, they are nothing that we, the community, can single-handedly do anything about.
This is a rant to the community.
Recently, after purchasing COD2 from the game store, with great joy I booted up COD2 MP for the first time. I clicked the busiest 64 player at the top of the list, which was half full at the time, ready to play.
Ack. 2 minutes worth of mods. My previous 'quick gaming session' had become a 'fill your computer with random crap' frenzy. I accepted this, considering that people have a tendency to create realism mods and got down to some playing.
The next day, I went server-fishing once again. I played in around 12 different servers, all by different hosts, and in different parts of the world. Some were big, some were small, it seemed to make no difference. 2 out of every 3 servers I entered had at least one mod running. Whether it was a tiny file to administer message files to the server, or a huge, multifunctional realism mod, it didn't seem to matter.
What is it with this huge fascination of mods? Understanding people wanted COD2 to be more than it already is, a few mods are to be expected, but not every single clan coding or personalising their own. Eventually I downloaded one modification which pulled the final straw. Not only did it make huge changes to the gameplay, it also put the creators CREDITS on the menu page of COD2!
Call me old-fashioned, but I don't want to turn on a game to see a couple of over-colorful clan members names that I've never heard of, with a witty comment saying how they've made the game better. Call me even more old fashioned, but I don't really want to be downloading stuff like this, especialy when some modifications peak over 5mb each, without at least some idea of what they are going to do. Some of them are the technical equivalent of malware and hijackware.
Following this, I quickly accompanied my counterpart Prometheus to create a small application to assist the cleansing of these modifications. After the creation of Pure-COD2, I ran it to clear my files, then undertook an experiment. I went onto COD2 at peak times to see how fast the gaming community had been infested by third party client side minimods. In the experiment, I visited 10 servers that met up to a certain criteria, these being:
- They MUST have players playing
- They MUST be dedicated
- They MUST hold more than 12 players
The results were shocking.
Here is a screenshot of what Pure-COD2 picked up after this experiment: That’s right, 100% of the servers I visited were modified in some way or another, leaving loads of useless junk in my COD2 folder that I will probably never use again.
(edit: Discount 'zzz_genericmodification', that was a file I was using to test pure-cod2 and forgot to remove it.)
However, this is not the end of the story. Pure-COD2 v1 doesn’t scan the directory, and as I manually checked it out, I had a bit of a shock. There were 3 new modification folders, crammed full with between 2mb and 5mb of files. This may not seem like a lot, but imagine how it would build up, especially after what I had been made to download for just 10 games.
On another quick test, I let the server browser load around 20 servers, before I stopped it by hitting escape. By looking at the browser icons alone, I could tell that 17 were modded.
I understand that you can turn downloads off. I also understand that there is nothing stopping you from removing those you don't want, but seriously does every single server have to be modified in some way or another? Do the creators of these tiny trinkets of code and add-ons not realise that all they are doing is creating a minefield of useless junk that is clogging up peoples COD2 files?
This most definatly wasn't an issue with vCOD and UO.
Now I leave you, I ask but one thing: Discuss.
I don't spend enough time here

You know, in the multiplayer options menu you can turn off auto downloading? Thats something I did the first day I had the game.

You have a problem with downloading 17k mods?
The realism mods improve the game so you don't have to shoot someone 3 times in succession with a 7.62mm rifle to kill him. (Par exemple) Also, the mods remove healthbars, allow nadecooking - even with tickers.
They improve the gameplay, FOR SURE. Non-realism modded servers are terrible.

I can agree with Khuskan on many points, I too hate downloading loads of "mods" many of which have no affect on gameplay. Don't flame me and say I have no understanding of the "modding world", I too am a modder. But yea if you don't like downloading mods turn off autodownloader and I believe you can set filters to "filter" out servers with mods running on them.
No! I'm Spamacus!

I understand this fully, but I don't see why you should be forced out of 2/3rds of servers up simply because they have files that you don't have.
I didn't make it!
As a server owner ill tell you how it is. Its my server......................... Im not charging you to come play there..... The servers are set up the way our clan wants them...........
