I was just browsing for files, and I happened to stuble along on a comment stating nobody ever plays MP with DX 9, but with DX 7. Why is this?

Reasons kind of vary on this, some peoples system don't run the game to well in DX9, so they use DX7 instead. You can get better FPS in DX7 even thought you dont get the better eye candy if it were set to DX9.

How do you switch through DX9 and DX7? I don't even know which one I'm using. Though I get the feeling that I use DX7, because I have an ATI Radeon 9250.

Really not to sure, since I don't have the game installed anymore, but it should be in your options menu under graphics or video card settings.

Head to "options", "Graphics", and under "Rendering Method Preference", select DX7 or DX9. It's probably defaulted to Auto unless you've changed it previously. Although I can run SP fine in DX9, something in the graphics seems to add to the lag (not sure how, though), so I'm stuck with DX7. Apparently this happens to a lot of other people as well.
