I'm gonna try to make Mandrake and XP dual boot. Any suggestion?
Actually I'd suggest SuSE or Redhat over Mandrake Linux... Generally those two beef it out better than Mandrake does, and since Linux being Linux you can still have complete control anyway.
But if you insist on Mandrake, I'd suggest getting a cheap smaller harddrive and make it dedicated that way you do not have to reimage any of your drives. Else have fun reformatting.
If you choose to reformat hardrives then be about your merry way. Make sure the Windows is the first Operating System on your primary harddrive (it does NOT like to be anywhere else). Then put Mandrake Linux wherever you feel like as it honestly does not give a damn. (Unlike my favourite OS OpenBSD which requires the entire root partition to be within the first 8 GB of a harddrive and I'm booting with Windows) Recommendation if you do full reformat is make about a 4-5 GB primary drive for the windows operating system and its DLL's alone, then make different primary/logical drives for what you need. When allocating different drives make sure you use each individual OS's FDisk or equivalent to make the drive space, that way nothing funny actually happens (i.e. don't use Mandrake FDisk tool to make an NTFS partition)
If you don't feel like doing that and take another way out, there are a couple of programs that can change NTFS file systems sizes without losing data (i.e. Partition Magic) I had some luck with that on my laptop... but haven't used that in over a year to worry about it.
Make sure you get a good boot manager... If you did not happen to get one in your download just reply here and I'll give you the links for some open source boot loaders that I have used in the past.
Anything else you need feel free to ask, and I might be able to BS my way out of it :nodding:
(I think I'll hold off on the install till I get an extra HD. I've got <10 gigs floating around 3 drives (2 real 1 logical). I figure I can double that with some pruning but that still might not be enough.
If you need any help whatsoever, feel free to ask either through here or any of the myriad of messenging groups. Sometimes I might be able to help, although it's been a little while since I've worked with Mandrake.
