I'm appealing to anybody else besides the people at Acitvision. Infinity Ward doesn't have any technical support, so I had to go through the publisher in order to recieve "assistance" with my game. Before patch 1.4 came out, I used to have steady performance between 50-90 FPS on max details. Since patch 1.4, the game performs normally but on random occasions I get spikes in CPU usage and my FPS drops to unplayable levels (20FPS or so). ALT+Tabbing the game a couple of times usually kicks the game out of the temporarly lull. I'm well aware that my computer is more than capeable of handling the game on any detail setting, and I'm updated to the latest everthing in terms of software. Call of Duty 4 now has patch 1.5, and the performance is the same.

The game performs the same way with AntiVirus disabled or enabled (I used to run it perfectly well with the full virus protection on), I kill all non-essential processes before playing the game, I've tried ChkDsk searching for errors, I just de-fragged both hard drives last night and this morning, and now the last thing the tech guy told me to do was to re-install Windows. Every other freakin' game in my library works perfectly well, including Unreal Tournament III which has a much more demanding graphics engine. In fact, I'm sure UTIII would have even better FPS than Call of Duty 4 would were it not for the 62FPS frame rate cap in UTIII. The spikes occur reguardless of how many people are on screen or where I am. I waited to one to happen when my player camera was facing a wall, with a little bit of foliage and an NPC dog off screen. It hit 20FPS completely uncalled for.

The tech support guy told me to put in the disk and choose 'upgrade' to replace missing or corrupted files. I have two basic questions:

1.) Is doing that actually re-installing windows? Or will it just replace files?

I love my computer just the way it is. I have everything set up just the way I like it and I'd hate to loose information, programs or settings that I've aquired since January of last year. If it's absolutely necessary, I guess I can do a re-install but I'd have to back up everything first. If it's just replacing files, and not altering anything or over-writing my copy of Windows, programs or settings, then that's fine. I'll go ahead and do it.

2.) Why is Call of Duty 4 the only game in my library that won't work properly?

Everything else from Unreal Tournament III to old games like Need For Speed: High Stakes works perfectly well. Infact, Crysis has more consistent performance than Call of Duty 4 does. (The max FPS I get obviously doesn't get as high as Call of Duty, but it stays around the same constantly while Call of Duty spikes randomly.) I'm convinced it has something to do with the patch since I didn't notice it before 1.4, but obviously Infinity Ward won't develop a new patch just for me and my computer. I don't know whats wrong. I'm baffled.

System specs:

Intel Core 2 Duo e6700 CPU eVGA 680i SLI Motherboard 4GB Corsair XMS2 DDR2 RAM running in Dual Channel PNY nVidia 8800GTX 768MB Video Card Two 320GB Seagate Barracuda SATA Hard Drives Soundblaster X-Fi Gamer Sound Card Windows XP Pro w/ latest updates OS

Can anybody help me out?

It happens in both instances of the game. I'm especially concerned about the multiplayer. I can't be competetive if I get lag spikes and I have to ALT-TAB or wait a minute to make it go away.

*EDIT*

Ooh, I see now this may have been the wrong forum. My bad. I'll re-post this in the CoD 4 forum.

Me too. I have a 3.2 ghz processor, 2 gig of ram a x1950pro and audigy sound card. I have tried to reduce my audio preformance, set it to 800x600 and I still get the spikes you were talking about. I go from 40-60 even up to 80 fps then I saw it bog down to 25 and 20 then back up. Mp sucks becuase I get owned real bad.
